Well my laptop is acting up. It's being cranky and pissing me off.

I did find the problem though. The damned thing is overheating. It seems it's like many people and doesn't like the Florida heat. (I suppose that means I'm going to have to open it up and vacuum it out again.)

Right now it's up on 2" wooden blocks with a fan behind it and seems to be working just fine.

Anyone else have a computer like this?

Oh we broke down and opened the windows today. It only reached a high of 85°.

Actually - yes. Dell's have a history of that. My HP is doing fine, but my old Dell was a heat nightmare.

There is probably a hairball similar to carpet on the air intake side. You can use compressed air to back blow the cooling ports. With it off please

I had one laptop that kept over-heating pretty chronically. It got to the point it wouldn't stay on for more than 5-10 mintues at the most, finally had to replace it.

Whenever my computer is somewhere sationary now I use one of those laptop cooling pads. It has two fans, and draws the hot air away from the laptop from underneath. Works pretty well.

I had one laptop that started overheating so bad I got scared about burning my naughty parts.

Of course, it worked well enough when I put it on a table and propped it up on the corners so the air could circulate underneath. But I have a desktop for that sort of stuff.

I'm actually quite proud of myself for showing restraint here since I didn't in one of Cat's threads earlier this week.

I had a Dell tower that sat on the floor and over time the fan would get louder and louder. Clearing the dust seemed to help some. Moving it from between a desk and wall helped more.

I own 3 Dell's and they all throw heat like little furnaces. My old tower's cooling fan at times sounds like walrus' mating...but I've checked it out and mechanically it's ok...go figure. The laptop gets so hot sometimes...even with the exhaust wide open...that it is definitely not for the lap. It's ok mechanically as well.

They're excellent 'puters tho. :D

This computer is an Acer Aspire.

I love the little thing. It's small, it's light and it's damned powerful for what I paid.

I'm sure the problems I've been having with it over the past year or so have something to do with the fact that I have cats. I'm sure the air ducts are clogged again by cat hair, just as I'm sure the keyboard not working might have something to do with one of my cats hurling a Hairball on it.

One of these days I'll have to replace it I'm sure.

Mine was also an Acer Aspire.

Don't put it on your lap!

If I do then it's propped up.

Honestly though I usualy use this on either a table of some kind or my little desk in the corner.

My wife has asked me to design and make a laptop desk for her with cooling fans in it. (Wood of course.) I'll have to see what I can come up with.

The two Dell laptops I used to own had a terrible overheating problem. Went out and got one of those cooling platforms and it seemed to dissipate the heat fairly well, but was a little difficult to use on your lap.

I have to open up my tower and vacuum it out about every three months or when the graphics cards FPS slows down.

FPS = frames per second
