A brief analysis of comments on a "Hot" Loving Wives story

I get what you're trying to say, but my whole point was that you can't judge the size of readership tribes based on one very neutral and quite atypical story. Keep in mind that even on such a story, you STILL received misogynistic comments.

To make any judgment, you'd need a comparative research with at least two BTB - burn the bitch and burn the bastard one each, two RAAC stories where different genders cheated, a swinging story, at least one where both cheated, etc, etc. The analysis of one atypical story tells us something, but it's only a small part of the picture, and one that, if taken separately, could lead to wrong conclusions.
That’s reasonable. Bear in mind that Penny’s analysis at the top of this thread is really focused IMHO on her experiences as a newbie in the category - imagine a genial Michael Palin wandering into a Hells Angels clubhouse with a camera. The resulting documentary doesn’t tell you everything, but many of the viewers would learn a lot more beyond the stereotypes.

I’m hardly an expert on LW, but I had a similar experience in my first story in the category (‘A Game of Snooker’), which is a ‘burn the bastard’ story. I expected it to be slammed for the female MC finding a way to kill off her husband, his lover, and his sleazy cousin without firing a shot herself (before running off with the narrator, who had used a paintbrush to help engineer the outcome), but the comments were often very thoughtful and the story rated really well even though the same tribes discussed by Penny were present. Some of my stories have been less successful (or even very much so) that way of course.

If I were to make one huge generalisation from all of this it would be to say that if you respect the readers in a category you will get a lot more back from them. That might seem completely fucking obvious, but I think that often the way we talk in the AH about the readers might suggest that we forget sometimes (myself included).

I think there are different ways to respect the readers and we over-index, maybe, on the writerly ones. There are a lot of stories that are popular, highly-rated and draw decent engagement not because the plots are good or the characters are multi-dimensional or the writing is especially interesting; it's because the sex is hot on the page. Giving readers hot sex is a thing that we - I - look down on more than I should.

Just getting to any sex after a discussion about Kant in our story was a major achievement.

The moment i saw the acent on "mysoginistic" i somehow knew what is it about.
The world went through such a strong left leaned and feminist ideas, that now even mild cases could rub certain readers wrong. It is worth mentioning, that if the "mysoginistic" comments are truthful, they are not mysoginistic, but mere observations.
The abortion part, in my point of view, is unforgivable. Brad eventually acknowledging his overreaction and the need for empathy is another nail in that coffin.
The other red light is Izzy. She studies critical race theory and gender studies... Here i am rolling my eyes.
It is not a happy ending. Instead of reconciliation, it feel like an endorsement of "elite" progressive education rubbing salt in cultural divides. The whole narrative leans toward empathy for liberal frustrations.
Brad is weakiling, i can't find myself in the main character. I am not going to use slants like shrew, cunt, bitch, but if you decide to preach, you have to be ready for the push back.

Finally, somebody saying it right!
My hat off to you, sir.
