I think that may be the worst idea I have ever heard. No reason to bring a national tragedy that should never be forgotten into a sex story.

James Cameron did that with the Titanic, which was the 9/11 of its era, and it went over very well globally. Admittedly, he was very classy about it.

Though I must say, I can see your point of view and I agree that such a story probably wouldn't go over very well with the bulk of its audience.

I suppose you are right about the Titanic movie which I did not think of. Still, that was an accident. Not a terrorist attack against innocent people.

It was also made a long time after the actual event.

My main problem with the story idea is that I just don't see what it would add to a sex story.

You have a point there with 9/11 having the "too soon" factor. But I fail to see how terrorism makes a setting less appropriate than an accident. Tragedy is still tragedy and grief is still grief. I'll bet that people who lost loved ones on the Titanic hurt no less than those who lost loved ones in the WTC.

This whole topic reminds me of a scene I once saw in a lacklustre horror movie. The mandatory hot chick is lamenting that the cast is all doomed (actually, she compares the situation to a plane crash) and decides then and there that she wants to have one last fuck before she dies. The only man around is her boyfriend's best friend, so she throws herself on him without any further discussion.

Even though there were grim overtones, the scene definitely had a very erotic quality to it - largely due to the fact that the woman had a great body. But the carpe diem factor - the "let's fuck like there's no tomorrow, because we're about to die anyway" energy that the scene gained made it very exciting.

I've since tried to capture that essence myself, in a story. Though I set it in the home of ficticious revolutionaries, during the revolutionary war, who were convinced that the British would soon conquer their lands and execute them for treason, so they had a death's-door affair.

While I would be extremely hesitant to try and base such a scene in the WTC on 9/11, I think I understand the atmosphere that the OP is looking for.

All sorts of weird behaviour happened, including people running into the flames instead of away from them.

Nobody was having sex, or even hugging each other.

So - I would not find a story such as you suggest believable at any level.

...On the other hand, getting back to the Titanic, there are reports of the people on board sitting down to play cards as she was going down, or simply enjoying a cigar, or a drink. There's a story about a chef who raided the liquor store intending to die drunk and happy. Ironically, the liquor kept him warm in the freezing waters long enough for one of the lifeboats to recover him alive after the ship sank.

Certainly, it sounds implausible on first glance that someone in an emergency situation would have sex on the brain. But, I think that in some circumstances, there's a phenomenon where the victims realize that their death is already certain and the futile panic subsides. Then, they are only left to considder what they want to do with their last few minutes. It's not hard to believe that some people would choose to have sex.
