So, Barry Bonds hit his 69th home run today. (What did you think this thread was about???) ;)

I got into a discussion with a friend today who told me he did NOT want Bonds to tie or break Mark McGwire's record. I argued that records were meant to be broken. And more power to him. What do you think? Of course he only needs one more to tie, so it is probably a moot point now.

Since this record stood for so many years before Big Mac broke it, it has lost a touch of its mystique anyway. Are there any other sports records that seem unreachable - unbreakable?

As a true Pittsburgher................I don't care for B Bonds........

I hope he does break the record.
I think Gretzky set some that will not be broke for a long long time but I am sure eventually they will be broke as well.

Just thought I would mention that I did come into this thread thinking that my favorite sexual position would be discussed. :p

Damn- I opened this thread to find something about (what else?) sex... I fell for it hook, line and sinker... :)
Tease
:p

Even before I moved to St. Louis, I knew that Mark was a team player. He knew that without his team, he would be just another man in a uniform playing the game that all boys dream about mastering.

Barry Bonds has shown repeatedly that he doesn't care to be part of the team that makes this sport what it is, 9 men on a field to achieve one common goal.

He won't travel with the team, he won't do interviews with the team, he wants to distance himself as much as possible from all the activities this team participates in.

Now you see him whining that he is not getting the recognition he deserves. His team doesn't support his quest to break this record. His own ego is truly the only thing that he really should concentrate on breaking.

Even if he does succeed and surpass Mark, I will proudly keep my front page edition of the true record breaker 70th home run.

*off my soap box now*

Just my opinion

Even with his .185 batting record, we in St. Louis are just as proud of Mark as they were the day he hit 70.

I do agree with lavy, I think they should slam the door on his ass the minute the final out of the season is called. Let's see how far that record will take him in life.

Being a record holder doesn't make you a better man, just makes you a few lines in a trivia book once your number is finally up in this world.

Well, it is well known he is a jerk. A jerk who usually ends up missing half the season due to well-timed "injuries". Frankly I am surprised he made it through the whole year!

Still, it is an accomplishment to reach this milestone. Home runs have never been about team effort. A clutch hitter is much more valuable to a team. A long ball hitter who can connect with men on base is the kind of player every team dreams about.

And it is not always true but when a player hits HRs, he consequently also has a high incidence of both walks (pitchers aint dumb - they don't want to serve him up anything good to hit!) and strikeouts. So, naturally their batting averages are not high either.

The mark of a team player is one who comes through in key situations, sparks rallies, goes the extra mile by hustling, stealing and making plays happen.

Kymberly, no one wants to take anything away from Mark. He is an awesome player- and was consistent throughout his career. He usually led the AL in slugging, HR and rbis when he was with the A's. No one faults him his decline- he has been playing injured for a very long time. His name will be remembered far longer since he was the first to break Maris' record. And with a style, grace and class. There really is no comparison between the two.

And Sosa ranks right up there in terms of spirit, humanitarianism and talent! No doubt his name will be among the leaders for many years to come as well. I believe that he already holds the record for most seasons with over 50 home runs.

Don't want him to break the record. He's an a-hole.

Ditto what Lavendar said............and to quote Forrest Gump "That's all I have to say about that"

I think it will be broken. Records are meant to be broken. But, Mark seeme3d like a REALLY nice guy, and he deserves the record more than Barry.

Since Kym & I are able to see Mark McGwire play nearly anyday we want, I know it's hard for us BOTH to accept, that the inevitable is about to happen, possibly tomorrow, and the first person to congratulate Barry, would be none other than Big Mac himself if he could.

That having been said, I am in a fortuante enough position to know 3 people who work for the Cardinals on their grounds crew, and get tickets at ANY time I want, such was the case when I was there for many games in 1998. I was there for his first, a grand slam as I recall, and I was there for many more, including 61, 62 and 67 through 70. I was there to see the original 62 & 67 through 70 home run hitter, and that's enough baseball history for me.

I'm more suprised that it wasn't Ken Griffey Jr.'s just as arrogant ass doing the record breaking though.

Doesn't matter if I like the player for personal things, but I respect Barry & Mark BOTH for their abilities to do such feats. Records will only get you MAYBE into the hall of fame, but that's as far as they can go, that's the true tops in the game.

you are so right about Big Mac being there to shake his hand. But reverse it, would Barry reciprecate? not a chance

I know it will be broken, but I would love to see it be Sosa who ends up with the last record. HE too is a real person who is grateful for his talent.

Barry is too arrogant to end up with that title. All Little Leaguers would be looking up to a slime ball. Those boys pay attention to how the players react when bestowed a treasured honor having anything to do with baseball. Why let Barry be that hero?

He is not a team player period. Baseball is a team sport.

hey lobito congrats too

DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. Athletes will always get bigger, stronger, and faster. But with the media attention now, I don't think that record will fall.

Yeah, but dead assholes are different!
Bonds is also a choke artist in the postseason, and he hits so many solo HRs. Kent has been way more instrumental for the Giants, most seasons.

I would much rather see Sosa break the record. These record holders should be role models to children. We teach our children cooperation and that these are TEAM sports not meant solely for individual achievement. And now we have the most egotistical self-centered baseball player (other than Cal Ripken who did the same shit) breaking a prestigious record.

Lavender, any reasons for the feelings towards Ripken? I've known the man to stay around hours after games to shake hands and sign autographs, and do things in the area for charity.
