You are right of course, but whales have help. I actually saw this on Discovery channel. A pod of males will approach a female. Now somehow the males decide who's going to get to home plate with the female. The show didn't go into how they decide which one. Probably some alpha male pecking order thing.

Anyhow, 3 or 4 males will support the female as she rolls over on her back. Whales (like fish) don't go belly side up unless they're dead, except for mating times. Again, there is no way a 100 ton male can get on the back of a 90 ton female in the water. So she rolls over and other males help brace her so she maintains this unnatural position.
