The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album was released. (OK, it was actually the 1st of June 1967 but that's not why June 1 is known in England as "The Glorious 1st of June" - perhaps it should be).

It changed pop music for ever.

I remember buying it during the first few days. That copy wore out years ago.

How many tracks can you remember from it?

The Beatles music is so particular and so evocative that, for many years, I could not listen to any of the albums all the way through-- too many childhood emotions would be dredged up.

As my own kids got older, though, I began bringing the CD's home, and I've re-attuned myself to the music through their experiences. "Sgt. Pepper's" is the latest one in our house. I hadn't forgotten much of it at all. I don't think it's possible to forget.

Most all. I thought then, and still do, that the title itself of "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" was poetry.

I also loved the imagery 'lovely Rita' brought forth: her little white book, the bag across her shoulder. That kind of writing stays with one.

I believe the Beatles have more albums in the top 100 than any other group (with industry pros/critics choosing) with Revolver at number one. My favorite band growing up. My kids also listen to them and my daughter has a Lennon poster.

All of them - it's sitting on a shelf right next to my desk. :D

It's one of my favorites...particularly, A Day in the Life.

Woke up, got out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

All of them. Sgt. Pepper's was the soundtrack to the last year anyone in my generation thought there was still hope for things, "Getting Better."

I know a lot of musicians that don't think it changed it for the better. I prefer old Beatles music, when it was just guys playing from their heart (or wherever it is they got their inspiration from ;) ). I've never been a fan of studio stuff that can't be reproduced live (or of music created on the computer that someone is incapable of playing without technical assistance.

George Harrison said that Ravi Shankar told him to forgo the sitar on "Within you without you"

he said that Harrison was nowhere near even basic competency on the instrument and would be embarrassed by it later, which, George said, turned out to be very true.

In that case, it's the best worst sitar-playing I've ever heard! :rose:
