But, though I appreciate Manhattan (the film and city) I don't really admire Allen as a director or artist. Kubrick, yes. 1. I know every line and every song from Alan Parker's Busgy Malone. Both the original and the Swedish translation.

1. Woody Allen is my brilliant nebbishy existentialist god, oxymoronically speaking. Sun-yi Previn notwithstanding, I have no qualms of conscience about distinguishing the artist from the man -- ala Roman Polanski.
2. While I'm not Russian, I do have enough basso/baritone profundity in my speaking voice to have engendered barbs of jealousy in my former English professor whenever I was called upon to give, what I was told were, panty-dampening recitations to an otherwise all female intro to Shakespeare class. (which I took merely for shits and giggles. I was not an English major)
3. As I am not nearly as literate or educated as I imagine you to be, I'm not sure if my pronunciation of penchant is by the book of arithmetic, so to speak. I pronounce the ch of chant like the ch of champagne and I place a slight stress on the first syllable.

   Bartleby.com's pronunciation differs from mine, with the ch pronounced as in champ and the second syllable much more truncated.
   My pronunciation, apparently incorrect, is more like the French word pencher.

Quilty, I can separate the man from the artist well enough, otherwise I would not be a Wagnerite, but I just find Woody off-putting. I love his earlier films, e.g., Bananas and Love and Death. I do get his humour though.

Nicolai Ghiurov, my fave basso, died recently. If you can, listen to his "Gremin's aria" from Eugene Onegin.

I was an English major, but am mostly self-educated and one of the oldest (57) members here so I've just been able to read more.

Your pronunciation is correct, Bartleby's is wrong (or giving the American version). Case closed.
