3 things about me

Q., I did mean the Hawke film. I have Diane Venora as Ophelia and as Hamlet! Murray was fine, and I liked Sam Shepherd as Hamlet Sr. I am not a traditionalist re. theater, ballet or opera. My favourite Ring cycle uses laser beams to create Brunnhilde’s mountain and Wotan looks like a gangster. I enjoyed Zeff.’s R&J when it came out but have no desire to ever see it again. I loved Postlethwaite as the priest best of all in Lurhman’s R&J (just cannot bear de Caprio).

I do not share your admiration for Branaugh in film. He is not a great film maker, though I do appreciate his efforts. I adore him for not cutting Hamlet by a word. I too am a film-lover. My favourite Shakespeare “as” film comes from Kurosawa and Orson Welles.

The thing is, there isn’t ever a whole perfect making of a production of a play. There is always a flaw, or flaws. I don’t mind that, I don’t know what I’d do if I ever saw a perfect production of Lear, or Tristan und Isolde, or Swan Lake. Certainly I would want to die at the end.

Perdita

p.s. If you want to see the best of Nureyev rent a documentary. I saw him in his prime and past it and will never forget the creature.

p.p.s. If you'd like to go on with this, perhaps we should start a thread?

Shakespeare films

'Dita, I'm afraid I don't share your distaste for Branagh either, although I also don't think he is the ultimate adaptor of the bard.

My current favorite Shakespeare film version is a Branagh offering though. It has been greatly overlooked in my opinion. 1993's "Much Ado About Nothing". I admit that the play is a favorite of mine already and I am thus guilty of favoritism in choosing the movie. I absolutely love Michael Keaton as the constable and Emma Thompson's Beatrice.

Clare, I think Misha is wonderful but Perdita is absolutely correct about Nureyev. Even in the poor substitute that film is for the live stage you can just feel Nureyev.

I wish I had seen some of the performances you have 'Dita. Dance and Hockey are very similar in that the power and the speed that awes you when you see one of them in person just does not ever truly transport itself to a screen, large or small.

My fave Shakespeare performance on film was "Taming of the Shrew" with San Francisco ACT if I remember correctly. Marc Singer was in it. It was done in the late 70's.

another Shakespeare comment

Unfortunately, I don't think he is doing it anymore, but I do have an ultimate moment.

Ian Mckellen used to do a one man show called "Acting Shakespeare" that I saw at the Old Globe in Balboa Park back in 1988(maybe '87). He was INCREDIBLE!!!! I became a lifelong shill for Sir Ian that night, long before the fanboys fell in love with him for Gandalf and Magneto in films.

At the end he asked any who were brave enough to come on stage and do a scene with him. About a dozen of us responded. I shook his hand and told him it was an honor to share his stage.

He gathered us all around and told us how it would work: our part was as the soldiers for Act IV:Scene III of Henry V.

"If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honor.
God's will, I pray thee, wish not one man more."

All the things I've ever done on a stage, high school or college, that silence is my best acting, if only because I shared his stage.

I'm smoking way to much, but too lazy to quit.

I have no creative stimulation, thus I am unable to write.

I do however have coffee.

Ditto.

I have the idea, but not the motivation.

Me too! :nana:

Belegon, that's wonderful about being on stage with McKellen. I of course have his R3 on DVD, but it too is not a good film, and the Brit actors totally overshadow the Americans (Annette Benning, who I like, is a poor Elizabeth). I do like KB's "Much Ado" very much. I don't esp. dislike him, he just lacks real film credentials (too Hollywood-ish for me).

I understand the comparison of ballet and sports, dancers are extremely athletic, but the big difference is that they must be athletic in time to music and seemingly without effort. There was a famous football player, first name Lynn?, who took ballet for the strengthening, and said it was the hardest physical regimen he knew. He proved it by having his teamates take a class; they barely got through it.

JJ:

Perdita

Lynn Swann.....awesome football player.

I took ballet for 6 years, many moons ago. I was extremely athletic in school...ran track, swim team, etc., but I can honestly say that ballet was the hardest, physically, of all the "sports" I participated in.

I still have the scars on my toes.

I'm something of a Richard III fanboy.

  2. My shrink's first name is Ekaterina
  3. I'd love to lick my shrink in a very dirty place

Q., please, please get hold of a vid of the NSC's R3 with Andrew Jarvis in the lead (mentioned above somewhere). Perhaps a library will carry it (SF has great vid shops). Then write to me your thoughts. The scene where Richard speaks to Elizabeth about breeding with her daughter is off the charts, his seduction of Lady Ann the first I ever believed. Jarvis is the most erotic and appealing R3 I've ever seen (live or on film). He has a great long nose, a naturally cruel mouth, bug eyes and is utterly bald. As Richard I'd fuck him on a dime.

Pssst, Perdita... I couldn't help noticing your post count. ;)

Pre-emptive congrats. :D

Three things about me.

1. I'm not smart enough to figure out how to put in a little picture on the side or how to put in a signature file.

2. I lie a lot. For example, I'm plenty smart enough, I'm just too lazy to read up on how to do it.

3. Having "Virgin" under my user id makes me giggle like a thirteen year old.
