Had an idea for ever about an alien race with three genders. Basically they have two females with the more dominate “impregnators” lacking a uterus. Instead they have the ability to implant there eggs in the infertile females “incubators” who lack ovaries which is later fertilized by the males “Fertilizers”. The impregnator’s offspring will become a fertilizer or an incubator. They do not produce more impregnators till later in their life cycle to keep compitetion for incubators down. This allows the impregnators to pass on their genes without wasting the resources to carry and raise their own young. When they discover humans they find out that the impregnator eggs can attach and grow in human females.

I'm so confused D:

and where does this go in terms of story? At first I thought it would be a threesome, but does that make sense?

ALL sex would be threesomes. Well, all normal sex would be threesomes. In that context, having a "twosome" would be considered kinky or possibly even perverse. I like it.

Isaac Asimov once wrote a novel that included an alien race with three sexes, called "The Gods Themselves." It's been years since I read it, but I remember the three-sex thing being pretty fascinating.

Not too different from my 3-sexed aliens, except in mine the egg-implanter is considered male; they are the big territorial ones, so they have a male social role, and since they neither get pregnant nor nurse children there isn't really anything female about them. Also with mine the "females" who bear the child do contribute genetically to the child, so it's not a role that could be performed by someone of another species, unless they were first transformed into one of these aliens.

Three sex races are popular within science fiction if I recall. I know I've come across the concept before, and you've nailed it with your concept. In my opinion anyway...
