Nationally Representative CDC Study Finds 1 in 4 Teenage Girls Has a Sexually Transmitted Disease.

3.2 Million Female Adolescents Estimated to Have at Least One of the Most Common STDs.

Led by CDC’s Sara Forhan, M.D., M.P.H., the study also finds that African-American teenage girls were most severely affected. Nearly half of the young African-American women (48 percent) were infected with an STD, compared to 20 percent of young white women.

Wow. We are doing something wrong...

Many think that they can just get a drug and get rid of anything that comes up, or it will go away.

They are shocked to find out that random sex can lead to having an STD for life

You mean sex education being taught in elementry school has not stopped children from making choices they have little to no business making?

I am shocked! Shocked I tell you!

well cold sores are a form of herpes
so i'm not surprised

have they never heard of
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ ?

true. usually cold sores are from herpes type 1 while the genital form is herpes type 2. but this study chose 4 common std's and evaluated for those, with hpv being the most common.

something is wrong. these girls are not getting the message, despite all of the sexual education/information that is available out there.

Just wait SV, You haven't seen anything yet.

They WILL ask you why they keep getting things like that. I can guarantee it.

edited to add: the teenage boys are JUST as clueless

i'm sure they will.

it's just so sad that such preventable diseases are pretty much an epidemic now.

I completely agree with you. And, I do NOT understand parents who think their lil darlin just isn't interested, or that the topic of sex is just too uncomfortable to bring up, or if they put it off long enough the OTHER parent will talk to the kid.

In the meantime, the teen has become ignorantly sexually active and is about to find out they have something, other than a baby on the way, they are going to have to deal with for the rest of their lives.

The only sex education a lot of these elementary school children get is about their hormones: wet dreams and bloody underpants. Big deal. That isn't going to help a teenager make a decision about sex. Trying to deny those hormones is like trying to stop a freight train. Whether parents want to believe it or not, their kids are probably having sex.

I fooled my parents for a year. Then I got pregnant at seventeen years old. Why, you ask? Because I was too afraid to get birth control. I was terrified my parents would find out. And of course, being naive and young is a perfect recipe for disaster and lack of forethought.

You push and push and push to take parenting away from parents and then you find out that teaching kids about such serious issues in a classroom full of other students is difficult and so you do it half assed.

You rely on videos and slides that gloss over the dangerous parts and pass out a condom and your work is done!

The "village" cannot and will not ever be able to replace parenting.

I am truly sorry these young women are forced to deal with this. I hate it. I wish those who oppose sexual education were less holier than thou about it and I wish those who think they can teach children better than their parents would wisen up and target the people who need to be targeted i.e. the parents.

This, however, requires logic and will not work.

Ha ha ha ha ha, you think that every single public elementary school in the US has a sex education program! The social conservative cause would be far more attractive if uninformed idiots like yourself weren't it's major proponents. If you'd actually bothered to do the research (and believe me, it is not difficult to access these types of public records), you would have learned that the majority of those "demonic/kiddy-fiddler encouragin' schools" are, in fact, usually at the population epicenter of all of those teen pregnancy and STD transmission statistics bell curve. If it wasnt for parents choosing to keep their children deaf, dumb and blind as far as sexual matters go, then there wouldn't be a need for public school sex education. My family is hyper conservative, but I was well informed of proper condom usage and the benefits of abstinance as soon as I started high school. I've never contracted an STD, and I've lived a less than admirable life (sexually speaking). If my mother could sumon enough courage to tell a 13 year old boy about the benefits of condoms, then I'd think that all of Rush's supporters would be smart enough to tell their children to "Wrap it up". However, they aren't fulfilling that part of their parental responsibilities, and other people's children get to suffer for their slackness.

There have been many ads directed toward parents, usually of the "talk to your kids about drugs" kind. Too many parents are uncomfortable talking to their children about sex, or trying to lock their children away, or even force the actions of their child. Those children are usually the ones that drop out of college and end up in bad situations after being away from their parents for six months. Backlash.

And there are people who can teach our children about sex better than some parents can. I'd rather have that than no sex education.

Seriously, you need to stop sucking off Rush Limbaugh, tell Michael Savage to remove his dick from your ass, and drop Bill O'Reilly's and Mike S. Adams's cocks. You're not even being rational right now. You're allowing yourself to be used as, figuratively, a Fleshlight for their egos. If you want to be a positive figure for change, you should stop being an Internet Warrior. Get away from your computer and take control of your life, instead of spitting out random "AM talk radio" platitudes.

Of course. No system is perfect and you and I both know either one of us could poke holes in my stated opinion.

Nature of the beast.

Too many adults are uncomfortable talking about sex and drugs and all the things they did at that age and do not want to be hypocrits about it. Parents, teachers, coaches, troop leaders, and religious leaders all fall into this category.

Asking the public school system to step in and parent children is a fucked up idea. It is not designed to do that. Teachers are not trained to do it. Adminstrators are not trained to do it. We can barely get more than 2/3rds of our kids to graduate and we expect our already overworked teachers and principals to take on more responsability?

It is my belief sex education in school will never be done properly and causes more harm than good. I do not buy the idea that some is better than none. I do not believe in half ass teaching.

I know you disagree and you have experience where I do not. I think you also know I am willing to consider and re-evaluate any and all of my beliefs.

It sucks that the last few generations of Americans have been so cowtowed by their own fucked up youths that they are unwilling to take on the responsabilities of adults.

I do not have a perfect solution. If I did I probably would be operating some think tank and be awarding honors for my ability to solve such weighty issues.

For someone who has never interacted with me you sure are making a whole bunch of assumptions.

And I'm sure your scathing reply will make me see the error of my ways and whisk me on over to the enlightened side of the radio.

I sure do hope when I make it there will be some nice cocks for me to fluff.

And in my experience many of these young girls just simply choose to forgo protection knowing full well the consequences. In reality the schools and most parents do a damn good job of educating kids on the causes and prevention of pregnancy and std's and still they take chances and end up with babies and bugs. We keeps saying "educate them!!" as if that is really the problem. I'm sorry, but from my years in health care combined with my years as a parent observing kids I'm here to tell you people are fooling themselves if they think kids just don't understand the risks they are taking. Oh yes, they'll cry and tell you they didn't know, because that's what kids do when they screw up. However, the sad fact is, most (I'm not saying all because there are exceptions) know and they still don't care enough say no or be responsible enough to buy protection beforehand.

Hmm <ponders>

I had not considered that angle.

The problem isn't that they don't understand it's that they are too young to make good decisions about their sexuality. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way to put that horse back in the barn.
