2024 Republican National Convention Thread

The "price of gas" argument is especially egregious. The price of gas on convicted felon Donald J. Trump's last day in office WAS historically low....but that was because demand was virtually non-existent, due to everyone working from home as a result of convicted felon Donald J Trump's botched response to the Covid pandemic.
Context is meaningful. Thanks for this, but Trump doesn't use context–just 'sound bits.' Biden's high price numbers for gas occured when Russia tried to manipulate the market to affect global politics. Biden countered by upping US production and the prices dropped, but the price had risen in the meantime–so the 'bad Biden gas' tag hangs out there just as in your example, it needs context.

Republican MAGA members are not into context or reason.

Convicted felon Donald J. Trump has always had a notoriously short attention span, and with the ongoing collapse of his frontal lobe (exact same timeline as his father, Fred), Convicted felon Donald J. Trump could only recall that Vance was the first and the loudest politician to immediately blame the shooting on Democratic liberals, facts be damned.

I've heard some unverified rumors that it was tied to Elon's glut of $$$ to Donald's PAC.

At some level, Musk has come to the realization that a strong majority of Americans despise him. He has enough "fuck you money" so that it doesn't physically affect him. But he still craves the fawning press he used to have.

Right now, his only chance at partial redemption lies in hitching his star to that of convicted felon Donald J. Trump.

Well done Miss Smartypants.
he presents himself as lucid politician... if you don't listen too closely to what he's actually saying. He presents as a believable (to his supporters) and trustworthy politician who fully understands the 'disadvantaged white male of Kentucky, as his book Hillbilly Elegy describes. Basically, he appeals largely to disadvantaged white males with an eloquence trump cannot muster.

trump needs his voters, and trump's kink of needing to 'own' and demean his VPs just adds sauce to trump's plate.

an excerpt from comments by readers of his book:
Very candid account of growing up disadvantaged and white. The parallels between his demographic and a historically, systematically marginalized Black America are evident. Both populations deserve understanding and empathy, but I tend to think the author thinks his people are somehow more noble.

Irony:

Lt. Gov. Who Said ‘Some Folks Need Killing' Speaks at RNC

The appearance represented a dramatic shift in tone for Robinson, who declared, "Some folks need killing!" during an appearance at a church in North Carolina less than two weeks before a gunman trained an AR-style rifle on former President Donald Trump at a rally in rural Pennsylvania on Saturday. Several prominent Republicans responded to the assassination attempt by criticizing by blaming Biden and Democrats for using incendiary rhetoric.

As a strong supporter of unions and a beneficiary of union gains I was skeptical of O’Brien speaking at the RNC but was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He did not disappoint me in spelling out the value of unions and the American worker and the calling out of corporate greed. But I’m left with being disappointed with this speech. There’s a specific reason why a labor president has never before spoken at the RNC and he failed to address that. Crediting Josh Hawley for switching on his belief of right to work states does nobody in Missouri good because that state remains right to work. Using the blanketing term of ‘corporate elites’ when he should have pointed directly at the nominee or the Republican who desired to fight him earlier this year and by saying, “I challenge each and every one of you, and especially my friends on the democratic side, to embrace collaboration…” was heartbreaking and tone deaf to the Teamsters and politicians who in the past 120 years supported unions.

There’s a way to speak truth to a hostile forum and O’Brien, IMO, failed. Here are better examples of how it could be done:

Most of the people who chorus “Drill baby, Drill!” don’t realize the US is already the largest oil producer in the world. They have been duped into thinking drilling more will lower the cost of gas without considering that oil companies trade oil with other countries and push up the price for the sake of their own interests.

The keystone pipeline is only profitable if oil is at a high price threshold - Trump spoke to this once, I’ll have to find a link.

If anyone thinks “Drill baby, Drill” is going to lower prices for consumers they should use that as a check on their information sources. They’re either a shill or a chump.

What they really don't understand is that the United States has had a secret policy through multiple administrations to use everyone else's oil before depleting our own resources.

And an environmental disaster caused by a leak from the Keystone XL pipeline would basically negate ANY AND ALL profitability (benefits) from the Keystone XL pipeline for average Americans.
