Christ...it's a total JFK thing, cuz I 'member too...I was in class in the 7th grade and this teacher came in crying and telling my teacher to put the t.v. on...everyone was in such shock...just completely horrified. Nothing like that had ever happened within my memory. It was the first of a long seriers of "Where were you when" moments.

It is sad that endeavor sometimes results in death. The fact that we have heros who are willing to take the risk reflects well on all of us. High on the list of heros:

Commander (CMD): Francis "Dick" Scobee
Pilot (PLT): Michael J. Smith
Mission Specialist 1: Judith Resnik
Mission Specialist 2: Ellison Onizuka
Mission Specialist 3: Ronald McNair
Payload Specialist 1: Gregory Jarvis

JMHO.

There was an interview with the last astronaut to walk on the moon on the aniversary of that tragic event and he reminded the interviewer that it was also, 39 years, to the day, from the Apollo One disaster with the fire in the cabin that took three lives.

A total of seventeen lives lost in the exploration of space, sad and tragic and not unexpected as new knowledge and pushing the frontiers has always been expensive in terms of human life.

amicus...

I'll never forget it...a co-worker came to tell us about it and he had a rep for poor jokes...when we realized he wasn't joking it was heart-rending...

I had just barely started kindergarten, and I still remember this. :rose:

Me, too. I remember all of the teachers of my school gathering together, whispering and crying. I didn't fully understand what happened at the time, but I soon caught on that whatever it was made my teacher (Mrs. Brown) stop bringing the television into the classroom so we could watch rocket launches.

I remember, too. I was home for some reason that day when I should have been at school. From my house, you could see the shuttle, after launch, going up into the sky. What I remember most, is that on the televised replay that played over and over and over, one of the parents clapped when the shuttle exploded, not understanding what had happened, thinking it was all part of the show.

The Challenger Seven. :rose:
