I feel like international horror is more hit than miss for me; American horror isn't all that great, because it often conflates gore for true horror, and gore for the sake of it is super trite (and boring).

I would not argue that most American horror is bad also. Very derivative and often way too enamored of the movies the maker’s grew up watching. Part of why International is like VHS to me is there’s just more mystery. I rarely know more than a trailer and/or a few letterboxed reviews going in.
