The right has been using public assistance as a wedge issue for decades, slyly insinuating that it's mostly lazy minorities siphoning money off hardworking white folks (without ever quite saying that). At this point I think so too. When he first came down the golden escalator, I suspect the GOP movers and shakers in general were just as horrified as most of us, and thought he would never even get through the primaries because he wasn't playing by the rules. Now that they've seen he was able to win precisely because he was so openly hateful, they've chosen to embrace it. Might as well, because the GOP base isn't going to be satisfied with dogwhistles anymore now that they've tasted the real thing!

I'm not on food stamps and never have been, but I have been on welfare programs before, in that I've attended public schools, sent cheap mail through a federally run postal service, used publicly maintained roads, and been to the doctor / hospital in our publicly run healthcare system, and so in exchange I'm happy to pay taxes to fund other welfare programs I haven't needed, like unemployment insurance or family benefits or anti-poverty programs.

I'm happy to pay taxes on services that work. welfare programs have been abused to death. public schools are failing. federally run postal services are a mess. our roads are a mess. our medical industry is corrupt.
