This thread is for all of us who suffer from Insomnia, whether it is temporary or a full-time gig.

Hi I am Malcah, and I am an insomniac. I hate it. The clock is my enemy. I will lay awake, mind whirring and rushing at a million miles an hour. The minutes tick tock by, dragging themselves along.

There will be moments where I see the sun peek out over the horizon and just shrug and sigh.

Do I take drugs for this condition? No. Does my body just shut down on occasion? Yes indeed, but luckily not while driving.

I asked my shrink about it once, he said, "Well there are 1/4 of Americans that just don't need much sleep." But I said, "Um, doc, isn't my case seem a bit extreme?" And he replied, "No, not really, I've seen worse."

Well, that isn't exactly reassuring.

So on goes the thread. If you have your piece to add, do so, and if you're up in the middle of the night, let's post here!

Yours, wishing for sleep.
Mal

Well, as I said in another post I either deal with it, or I take a bendedry. I only take one, but I'm very sensitive to medicine. I'd suggest 2 for the average person. But it works, and well. I normally sleep all night. Well, except for when the baby wakes up and can't find his bottle.

Well, I was able to sleep last night and the night before. I'm hoping my little streak will continue. Maybe like, the rest of my life. Nah, that's way too much to hope for.

I've learned that I just cannot sleep at night ... so I found a job where I will work all night and can sleep all day (I truly sleep better on that schedule). At the moment, though, I'm still on days for orientation. Knowing that I have to be at work at 7am, and it's a 40 min commute, I went to bed Sunday night at 10 - at 2.30 I was still awake and that's when I gave up looking at the clock until I got my ass up at 5.30 (I did get some sleep, but precious little). After a 12 hour shift on Monday, knowing that I probably wouldnt' sleep, but had to work again on Tuesday at 7, I went to bed at 11 - I actually fell asleep sometime shortly after 12.30 (that's the last time I looked at the clock). I'm really looking forward to flipping over to night shift so that my insomnia won't be so bad.

I've always been the same way. I sleep much better during the day. I don't even know why; Mamma always said she was like that because she had worked night shift for so long (she was a nurse's aid). I seem to have just been born that way. That made school even worse when I was growing up. Ugh.

hehehe, I used to drive my mother straight up the wall when I was in school ... it was fun :D

I never sleep all night and awake about 2 a.m. every night.
I do sleep better with scooter here, however, I am not sure it is terribly flattering for me to say he is a great cure for insomnia!

;)

If I'm trying to sleep at night, I have to have someone with me ... I cannot sleep alone anymore. During the day, I still sleep better if someone is in bed with me, but I still sleep better than at night even without someone there.

I have spells of insomnia, particularly if I have something weighing on my mind, and my brain just ... won't... stop!

Sadly, lack of sleep is a known migraine trigger for me. So it's something I have to be careful of.

Actually I sleep better during the day too. I read an article somewhere saying that they're discovering that it's a genetic thing, which doesn't surprise me. It's not a schedule thing! It doesn't matter what time I go to sleep, I don't sleep well at night, two hours of day time sleep is more restful than 6 hours of nighttime sleep.

Yes for me too. My dad gets 3-4 max a night. I find that if I get any (praise be) and it ends up being over 6 hours, I am toast. I just can't function. And here I go again, gearing for another night....perhaps I'll do some more editing :)

Ugh last night was another longie. But I got a ton of editing done. I ran into a friend yesterday that said ambien is great. I get leary of "sleeping aids." Have any of you guys tried it?

< 8hrs I feel GREAT
>8hrs I feel like SHIT.

Your body only needs 1REM cycle (for most individuals...)

I think I slept a total of five and a half hours last night. I say total because I woke up at least nine times. So I'm feeling tired and cranky today.

lets see, I went to bed at 1 last night, I was up twice with the baby, once because my body hates me, and up for sure at 9:30. So with getting up, and the time it takes me to get to sleep, I did pretty good! What 7 hours? woo hoo!

You sound like an old Model T Ford!

When I do 3 12 hour shifts in a row, I get pretty stupid by the end of the 3rd. I do usually sleep between them, but obviously not enough. During the first shift, I'm fine, no problems. During the second shift, I get kinda slap-happy (which, of course, always amused my co-workers to no end for me to get like that at about 3am ... I was the entertainment to keep them awake ... LOL). During the third though, at about 2 or 3 am, I would get downright stupid ... I would just sit there and stare into space even if people were talking to me ... I wouldn't always understand what they were saying, and I had a habit of answering the phone if a call light went off

I've already warned my new job that I really need to not do 3 days in a row....

Well I've got a living roomfull of teenagers, so I got kicked off the computer at about 11, my time. But I was up until 1:30, and then the baby had a bad night. I was up with him about 4 or 5 times. I think he was having nightmares or something. Then I was up at 8:30 with him. He is soooo going down for an early nap.

AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Not even writing helps tonight. I can feel the waves of sleep trying to lap at my shore but to no avail....sleep does not come down....argh.

Well, it's now nearly 3, and I'm WIDE AWAKE! *sigh* I took a bath, read a book, did some writing. Nothing. If I'm not sleepy pretty soon, I'm gonna take a benedryl.
