Save A Life Foundation Programs

How much First Aid training do you have?

How about your Children? Spouse?

I first heard about the Save A Life Foundation this morning on the radio. and realized that I've been very lucky to have had First Aid Training, CPR Training, "Buddy Care" Training, Water Safety/Rescue Training, and even a Disaster Survival Training course in High School that was actually aimed at what to do after a Nuclear Attack. I''ve had so much training that I've forgotten that First Aid training is NOT a "normal" part of life for most people.

I've had to use my First Aid training about every two years for something more serious than cuts and scrapes and just did what was needed without really thinking about it.

The lady who founded the Save A Life Foundation lost her daughter because not even the Police and Fire Department where she lived had even basic First Aid Skills except for EMS personnel. Her Daughter died because nobody knew what to do to keep her alive until EMS could arrive -- Not even the most basic level of First Aid to stop bleeding.

If you ansered NO to the basic question, PLEASE take a First Aid class from the Red Cross or Save A Life Foundation. If the school your children attend doesn't offer First Aid Training, call your school board and find out why not and tell them about Save A Life Foundation to get a program started.

The sooner children start learning what to do in emergencies, the better they retain the information -- My first "First Aid" course was part of my 4th Grade Health class in 1959, and what I learned then is still the basis of my response to accident and injury; later classes only reinforced and built on those very basic First Aid principles I learned at age 10.

Yes, I would be able to save a life.

I am CPR certified both adult and child, I am also First aid certified.... we had to take these classes when I worked in the hospital and also for one of my other jobs.

Probably. I've had both CPR and First Aid training and am certified by the Red Cross in both, but I've never had the opportunity to use them yet.

Me neither. But I work arounda lot of heavy equipment and I know It's going to happen someday.

Ive had the St Johns course ( Canadian I think). Ive also had trainging while going through my swim lessons. I worked in a hospital for mentally disabled adults and had to take speciallized training for seisure activity as well.

I was on the scene of an auto accident and luckily enough when the woman driving the car went into seisure activity I was able to assist her until a nurse came on the scene. Its amazing how it makes you feel when what you learn is finally put to use. Helping someone really humbles you!

I think I could save a person or at best keep them alive until professionally trained people arrived.

Learning First Aid and lifesaving skills are never a waste of time!
It could be your family that needs you the most!

I have had CPR and ACLS training, since I am in the medical field I have had to use them.

Went through First Responder training (40 hours of First Aid & CPR) in '85. I considered doing the other 40 hours to be equivant to an EMT, but I had to be 18 to take the course. Computers had my primary interest by then.

FR training was offered free and encouraged in my home town since we only had a volenteer fire department & the closest ambulance was around 20 minutes away. Think they finally got a BLS ambulance stationed with the fire trucks around '92.

I will be recertifying for First Aid & CPR in the next month or so due to my associations with ARES/RACES and the Red Cross. A lot of the basics I remember due to having kids around who get themselves hurt and my dabblings with herbal remedies.

Are you sure?

I've never had to deal with administering CPR or a truly major injury, but I have had to deal with cuts bruises and sprains (both minor and moderately serious) over the years -- Especially with four younger brothers and having raised two children.

Just being able to distinguish between a serious injury and a minor one is a major benefit of having the training -- My Ex-wife has no first aid training and panics at every little bump and bruise, no to mention anything involving bleeding; to her if you cn see blood it's ooviously going to be fatal. :(

Good post!

My father was the Director for Safety at SFO International Airport Maintenance Base for several years before he moved up to other managerial roles.

He also volunteered to teach First Aide and CPR to local Girl Scout troupes in our area. I got to be his assistant.

I've been certified since 1980 and have actually had to use my skills on several occasions.

There are very few basic things that people need to know that could make a huge difference in saving a life.

Its not gross really, though some people can't get past that natural human part of it.

Golden Rule I say. Sure hope there's someone around if I need help someday.

Great information. And sadly I concur. In the area I live we are facing a huge problem with the decreasing number of not only those who wish to volunteer, but a great number of those who do, have NOT had any basic training. There are those who volunteer to drive the rigs, but simly have not had the proper training to do anything past that, and are NOT turned away because the volunteer numbers are so low.

I wish more people would take the initiative to learn the basics. Even in the worse situation, a little knowledge sometimes is all we need to get the ball rolling to save a life.

That's what I like about Save A Life Foundation's approach -- They work with and through the school system so its not a matter of initiative, it's just "What I learned in school" to the kids.

Get your local school system in touch with Save A Life Foundation and make a start on getting everyone in your area the Basics -- it won't help immediately with your volunteer progrm, but it will make a big difference in 15-20 years when the Kids who've had the full program are old enough to volunteer.

Basic first aid? Yeah. Stopping bleeding, assessing the seriousness of an injury, all of that I'm perfectly capable of. I used to be certified in CPR, but that was years ago.

Thankfully, most of my first aid skills are needed way more by my horses and dogs than my kids or other humans.

Yup

I'm CPR trained and certified--never had to use it, but would if I had to...

Not unless you also know how to stop the bleeding when you shoot yourself in the foot.

One shot, one kill.

If you are trained remember to keep the training current. Know your limitations and always keep a cool head.

And remember guys, giving CPR to some hot mama is always a good chance to cop a feel at no charge.

Carry on.

Beyond Sell-by Date...

My First Aid training WAS comprehensive - 30+ years ago.

I was qualified in First Aid first as a Boy Scout; then as a surf lifesaver; then as part of a cliff rescue squad.

But my training never covered Mouth to Mouth - we were taught the Holger-Neilson method.

Also trained in Fire Fighting - on shore, at sea, under biological or nuclear attack (the safety suits were HEAVY and sweaty).

Doubt I'd be much use now because of damage to my body caused by a very active youth.

All I have left of my training is a knowledge of what NOT to do.

I'd recommend the one day courses to anyone.

I should sign up for a basic course, if they'll have me. Next one starts in July locally.
