I'm no medical expert, but i do know that vaginal thrush is caused by the same kind of yeast that causes oral thrush. Yeast is normally present in the vagina, but when it overgrows it causes what we know as thrush.

Chances are that you are possibly re-infecting each other. (I know this is the case when a baby has thrush in her mouth and the mother is breastfeeding. If you only treat the child, then the child will get re-infected when she next feeds, as the thrush is present on the mother's nipples) My suggestion is that you both have to be treated - be sure that it's all cleared up before you move on.

I want to ditto Nirvana's post. I have an ongoing problem with yeast - intestinal and vaginal and it sounds like your girlfriend could be in the same boat. I can be treated with oral diflucan but if am not careful, will continue to have problems. If this is the case with her, working with a traditional practitioner may be more beneficial than working with a western doctor.

I have finally learned to control my yeast through the following:

1. Almost eliminating sugar from my diet and only having 2 - 4 alcoholic drinks (including wine) per week - both sugar and alcohol feed yeast

2. Taking one clove of raw garlic daily - grate mine with a ginger grater into a small glass of milk which cuts the bitterness but have a friend who has it with bread and olive oil - garlic has antifungal and immune-building properties

3. Tastes awful but has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties and really works - about two strong squeezes of liquid grapefruit seed extract in a small glass of water (combined in the evening with my garlic), 2x daily

4. Daily doses of good intestinal bacterial cultures (yogurt never seems to have enough to work for me): L. Acidophilus, B. Bifidum + L. Bulgaricus or other probiotic support

I also have to take a course of diflucan occasionally. I know this seems like a lot - I've found that once the yeast is under control the most important step is #1. When I've had too much sugar or alcohol, #2-4 become very important until body stabilizes again...

Now a question regarding safer sex...

How does everyone here negotiate safer sex with other women?

With men, it is very clear cut. With women, less so, for me - perhaps because HIV is so less an issue and, along perhaps with Hep B is the only STI which seems utterly serious and scary.

The biggest concern for me when it comes to W-W sex is Human Papilloma Virus, also called HPV or warts. Biggest, scariest issue - while most forms of HPV (over 40 identified at this point) are benign and resolve themselves in a year or so, a couple are directly linked to development of cervical cancer. HPV is almost endemic in the sexually active lesbian community in San Francisco, as is Trichomonis (not terribly serious unless pregnant but very itchy and smelly - yuch LOL). And HPV is easy to transmit through touch, including (OH NO! and sigh...) tribbing if warts are present on the labia or other parts of the vulva.

So, questions:

Do you practice any forms of safer sex?
If you do practice safer sex, what do you do?
What are your absolute boundaries vs. things you'll bend on?
What did you base your decisions on?

Me? (as a health educator, I feel a little nagging ambivalence here - thus the question)

Right now, am only insisting on using condoms for sharing sex toys (decision based on the ease with which all sorts of bugs can be transmitted this way) and latex barriers for anal anything with someone new (STEDs are nasty buggers). Also don't trib with someone until we've had a serious discussion about STI protection and I try to avoid touching myself after I've hand-penetrated a partner but don't use latex gloves. Nor do I use dental dams for oral-vaginal, taste and my own pleasure winning out over my assessment of risk for these activities... (and yes, I know that latex or saran wrap can add to the friction and so potential pleasure)
