I'll be there for one day and two nights. My hotel is in the French Quarter.

I've heard a lot of vague stuff about the place, but can anyone offer me some specifics on what I should do there?

Brennans Steakhouse is awesome! Cafe Du Monde of course (bignets and cafe au lait). The St. Louis Cemetary tour and Bayou tours are cool but sounds like ur time is limited. Fun place :D

I've never heard of any of them. I'll have a full day to bum around there... I can't spend too much and I'm limited to places that accept plastic in lieu of cash.

Drink. Lots. Anywhere on Bourbon street, but make sure to have a hurricane at Pat O'Brien's. Eat at Acme Oyster House, or Napolean House for a romantic dinner. Shop at the French Market, and relax with a cold one down by the river. When you get bored of the quarter, take the streetcar down St. Charles avenue and check out the mansions in the Garden District. And for the best greasy spoon in the world, take the streetcar down to Riverbend (where St. Charles turns into Carrollton) and eat at the Camelia Grill. And stay hydrated, it's insanely hot this time of year. Have fun!

I can't believe I forgot Cafe du Monde! A must-do if you can spare the cash, should cost you less than $3 or so.

Do NOT mess with the Vodoo chicks!!! Keep your wallet and cash seprate and in your front pockets... walk in the middle of the street NOT the side walks as much as possible.

I'll likely be drinking some. The bad part is that I'll be alone, so no romantic places and some other places might not be as much fun alone either.

Brennans Steakhouse is a few doors down from ACME Oyster Bar. ACME was always packed so I never got to try it...I heard it was good. Brennans is expensive but well worth it. I guess it depends on what your priorities are....drink, food, or site seeing. One day there would be such a tease. Try some alligator on a stick if you get the chance.

look out for the rising sun ... it's been the ruin of many a poor boy :)

It's an outdoor-ish (there's a covering) coffee place, famous for their Cafe Au Lait (half strong coffee and chicory, half steamed milk) and beignets (French doughnuts with sugar on top). It's a tradition, down by the French market, it's been there since 1862 and it's open 24 hours a day, so it's perfect after a night of drinking.

I'm not sure how serious to take this.

LMAO Normally, I tend to be pretty selfish about loaning out body parts, even dead ones like air and cuticles.

It's good advice, pickpockets like to frequent the French Quarter. Drunk tourists are easy targets, so keep your wits about you. And most people involved with Voodoo that would bother with a tourist are not really Voodoo practitioners, they're just trying to make a buck on the city's reputation. It's not really something you have to worry about, although if you are interested in the religion there is a Voodoo Museum on Rue Dumaine.

Very.

Watch behind you, too. I had a guy shadowing me last time I was there. I'd stop to look in a window, and he'd duck into a doorway. At one window, I started talking loudly about how much I like golf, and demonstrated my swing with my walking stick. He disappeared not long after that.

If you are being followed, especially at night, spend a lot of time in one of the brightly lit gift shops. He'll get bored and go look for another mark.

Soooo... watch my alcoholic intake, especially since I'll be alone.

That's good advice anywhere, but something that we often need to remind ourselves.

If you're on your own, at night, tag along with a group.

My hotel was about two blocks off Rue Bourbon, and I was so paranoid about the guy who was following me that I took a cab.

When the short hairs stand on your neck, there's a reason and you best obey them.

I'll second Brennans and Cafe Du Monde. Also, people watching on Bourbon Street is always in season. It's just fun to be there at night and hang out and see what happens.

Take home some pralines for Mom so she'll think you at least did something wholesome. :D
