I learned a long time ago that black women for the most part, especially traditional black women, don't take shit off of anyone whereas most white women, especially traditional white women would rather cower in fear than speak up for themselves.

No. No way.

A lot of black women talk tough to hide their vulnerability.

The amount of black girls I hear saying "I'm never going back to him, I'll sooner beat his ass." then 2 days later, "oh well, you know, I told it not like it was...I made him breakfast, he can be so sweet. " and stuff.

why do you create all these alts? ... are you trying to help share values for laurel by increasing the lit membership level


anyway i doubt stingray meant it this way ... but it depends what you mean by traditional

the traditional stereotype image of black women is that they are very matriarchal

and if you look at old movies the stereotype for white women is often of the damsel in distress waiting for the man to rescue her


however i'm not sure how true those stereotypes are now or even if they were then

Women were seen as that by stupid people. They were limited by these perceptions. That's not a Good Thing[tm], by the way. Men are also victimized by stereotypes, too.

Stereotypes suck in a huge way... I've been saying this for years.

I will agree that traditionally, black women seem to take shit from NO man. However, the opposite is not necessarily true of white women. Most of the white women I know wouldn't take any more shit than that.

I always thought it was a function of the perceived resistance and social disapproval that a woman faces.

In Minneapolis/St. Paul, a few years ago, there were two really bad instances of police oppression back to back. First, a policeman shot two unarmed 12 yo boys in the back, then actually threw his own daughter up on television and hid behind her skirts. Not too long after that, an off-duty police officer brained a teenage boy like a sheep against a brick wall. In that one, the police/prosecutor collusion was practically advertised on TV, as the pity campaign was launched to make sure the cop wasn't charged with a felony so that he wouldn't lose his job (McDonalds isn't hiring anymore?). The sight of a prosecutor standing in front of a judge and saying "this is the sort of officer our community needs" is something that, if I put it into one of my plays, nobody would believe.

From the women of any color, not a peep of outrage about any of this. After all, it would mean that they'd have to go up against the real powers of society, and they don't have the courage to do that. Not even to protect their own children. If some sex offender is to be moved into their neighborhood, they launch an almighty stink, knowing in advance that they won't have a real fight on their hands, will never actually have to face him, can anonymously hide in crowds and will be praised by the patriarichal, and matriarichal, powers that be about what good, concerned women they are, blah, blah, blah...

But especially in the face of authoritarian abuse, you can always expect the women to pull a Sergeant Schultz, and see nothing, Nothing!. There, they'd actually have to engage an enemy that would meet them face to face and fight back. This is one reason why places like Wal-Mart get off so easy, such a high concentration of female employees that nobody even thinks of forming a union and engaging in battle against the bosses.

In the face of a real fight, when the stakes are high and the enemy determined and strong, it's always a good idea not to place the women behind you. They'll actually join in with their enemy, and attack you from the rear...

[EDIT NOTE: Anybody who doubt's that last paragraph, I bring up the familiar reality of what happens when somebody interferes with a pimp beating up one of his 'ho's. In the resulting fistfight, guess which side the 'ho joins in on?]

Even if your assertion about women in general was true, it would only prove that women are no different than everyone else in that people turn on each other rather than join forces against people in power. Women don't deserve to be singled out like that, as men are just as likely to turn on you and attack you from the rear, for reasons of their own.
