You can't kill the METAL....the METAL will live on.

You posted a metal band I really really liked, in another thread, I can't remember the name. Help me remember. The only clue I can offer: there were no vocals.

Note to BotanyBoy: I'm not so much embarrassed as I am annoyed.

I spent some time searching YouTube for videos, even ones with just stills, for people banging metal—literally—in a somewhat musical way, but when I searched terms such as "banging metal" the results were all too predictable.

Be that as it may, I was far more the metal fan then than I am now, and even then I wasn't totally committed.

Of course tastes are subjective.

Second, the speed metal starts to sound the same pretty quickly to me.

Third, the whole darkness bit starts to become a turn-off pretty quickly.

If only there were songs with the strength of metal, but not so negative. I suppose there are hard prog-rock examples such as Triumph's Hold On, but such are over 40 years old.

Below are, in my view, some of the better of the somewhat lame results—save maybe the first—that one was cute. :D

I found them, I might as well post them, but you need not click them.

Btw, some of the stuff in your post here sounds interesting.

Right on, yea they are.

Second, the speed metal starts to sound the same pretty quickly to me.

Dude......I've been jamming the hardest metal I can find, shredding guitar and actively pursuing the most advanced/technical (and heaviest sounding) metal for 25 years.

It's certainly not all for everyone, and it's a small crowd of ears that the genre appeals to in a dominant manner.

Third, the whole darkness bit starts to become a turn-off pretty quickly.

I can appreciate that.

Here is a prog album that's metal for sure, and while it's got some darker moments it's overall not very dark sounding.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kora_(instrument)

The kora is a 21-string lute-bridge-harp used extensively in West Africa.[1]

Description

A kora is a Mandinka harp built from a large calabash cut in half and covered with cow skin to make a resonator with a long hardwood neck. The skin is supported by two handles that run under it. It supports a notched double free-standing bridge. It doesn't fit into any one category of musical instruments, but rather several, and must be classified as a "double-bridge-harp-lute". The strings run in two divided ranks, making it a double harp. They do not end in a soundboard but are held in notches on a bridge, making it a bridge harp. They originate from a string arm or neck and cross a bridge directly supported by a resonating chamber, making it a lute too.

The sound of a kora resembles that of a harp, though when played in the traditional style, it bears a closer resemblance to flamenco and Delta blues guitar techniques of both hands to pluck the strings in polyrhythmic patterns (using the remaining fingers to secure the instrument by holding the hand posts on either side of the strings). Ostinato riffs ("Kumbengo") and improvised solo runs ("Birimintingo") are played at the same time by skilled players.

Fuck! this song is good!

I don't know if this is truly metal, and of course, I really don't care.

Generally as I'm not too much into metal, I'm even less into metal versions of pop songs, but this is definitely an exception.

The chorus is particularly nice. For some reason his voice makes me think of Michael Gira (with Jarboe in the background) of the Swans when they sounded particularly good. I'm not sure they were that good, but in my better subjective experiences in listening to them—as I remember them at least, the comparisons arise.

At least this song doesn't seem negative, and though there I hear no guitar gymnastics—fuck, I still love the music, and of course, the video (however non-official) is frikin' easy on the eyes.

As good as the original song was (and it was and is still), this is better, and it's definitely better than any metal I've heard in months, perhaps even in a year or two.
