Yacht Rock...the very best of.

I personally think this is one of the songs that helped define the signatures of yacht rock (even though it's about a horse):

Wildfire - Michael Martin Murphey

Ah yes, a song written by someone who apparently thought a "killing frost" kills animals instead of plants.

I've never been clear on the distinction between yacht rock and what we in the '70s just referred to as soft rock.

I could cheat and post a whole Spotify playlist someone made, but the excluded Bread, so they can piss right off.

This is my go to on Pandora at the shop.

Bread?

I remember the late winter/spring of 1972.

Baby I'm-a Want You was spinning on the turntable in my GF's bedroom.

She was tall, blonde, and had really big tits. Every boy's dream.

Bread is good....nice list Rory, especially that Sentimental Lady.

"Sentimental Lady" was a song Welch repurposed from his Fleetwood Mac days. The solo single was a little less eccentric sounding.

My freshman roommates were obsessed with the Alan Parsons Project and Steely Dan. (One of them also loved Dan Fogelberg; the less said about that quiche-eater, the better.)

But they definitely weren't yacht rock. I always got the feeling Parsons wanted to be a prog act along the lines of ELP or Yes, but those weren't the inclinations of his partner Eric Woolfson, so they ended up as prog-lite.

The instrumental lead-in to "Eye in the Sky," called "Sirius," is by far the most well-known thing Parsons ever did, even if hardly anyone knows it by that name:

Chicago were hippies who bought the yacht sometime between "Dialogue" and "Saturday in the Park" on Chicago V.

Cool. I never got into Fleetwood Mac...I think my mom ruined them for me.

No definitely not, I just think these particular tracks fit the genre.

Just like some Kenny Loggins? IMO totally fits the "yacht rock" sound.....others definitely not.

Oh I know....when I first listened to the album a couple months back I thought some sports event was going to come crashing through my door into my living room.

"Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)"
-Enya

Let me sail, let me sail
Let the Orinoco flow
Let me reach, let me beach
On the shores of Tripoli
Let me sail, let me sail
Let me crash upon your shore
Let me reach, let me beach
Far beyond the Yellow Sea
De, De, De, De, De, De, De, De, De, De

Sail away, sail away, sail away [x4]

From Bissau to Palau - in the shade of Avalon
From Fiji to Tiree and the Isles of Ebony
From Peru to Cebu hear the power of Babylon
From Bali to Cali - far beneath the Coral Sea...

Are these yacht rock or just sound like it?

The Wilderness of Manitoba - Echoes (Official Video)

The video was directed by Canadian John Albanis and shot over 2 days in Death Valley in California. It's a highly cinematic, surrealistic road trip through the Mojave Desert. It was produced with a small grant from muchfact.ca

(though I heard the song long before I saw the video.)
