Sex & Shenanigans

Some times, in very very specific circumstances, I kinda wish our universe was more like the one in Warhammer 40K. As someone who works in IT, imagine being able to pray to the machine spirits to cooperate in solving the issues you're having with the sacred compiler, instead of manually trudging through endless incomprehensible logs.

Yes, work's been a bitch lately. Hey folks 💕

My only familiarity with Warhammer 40k is the table top RPG with all the miniatures. I've never played it, but there are always games going on at the store where I play D&D. It looks like a wildly expensive hobby. I imagine the video game is a much cheaper option.

I don't think that WH40k can be considered an RPG, the tabletop version that is, can it? Isn't it just a wargame? You line up the lil soldiers and then out come the rulers and the dice and you smash 'em together? Never played it to be honest, but the lore is incredible! And the pc games are great 🥰

I dunno. I've never played. But yeah, it looks more like a straight up wargame than an RPG.
I have to say, the rulers are a turnoff for me. Yeah D&D has math and some DM's are stricter than others with line of sight, blast radii, and things like that. But I don't like having to break out rulers and protractors and geometry textbooks to play a game.

Completely agree! When we're in big, meaningful fights our DM usually prepares a grid with all the details drawn and we use minis for our characters, but unless it's a Big Bad then it's all in our minds eye and the rules are made of rubber ☺️

Do you play often? For us it's less and less as the years go on :( damn people with their real lives and real responsibilites... i just wanna play

WH is a more general war game, and it is absurdly expensive. Singular warhound units can cost well over $100, and that’s before paint and customization.

I’ve never played but have friends who have made it to national championships.

I play DnD, have a game currently in the works with some newbies, so the DM is being very generous the first few sessions to get their feet under them, while us veteran player are giving lots of helps.

I play every Sunday at a game store. Those are much more reliable games, since the DM's are paid, and as long as they show up the game goes on. Even if a couple players can't make it, we still play. I also run a home game, but that's much more "we'll play if there's time this week" and there's not always time.

There are TTRPG’s for 40k, used to Fantasy Flight now I think it’s Cubicle 7 with a totally different system, it’s orders of magnitude less popular than the wargame though. And even than Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying,

I learned a very expensive lesson that I don’t enjoy painting minis very much. Or skirmish games either really 🤣

Oof, yeah X that’s not a “I’ll dip a toe in and see what I like” hobby. You’re either fully committed, or not partaking at all…

Thankfully, as stated, I had friends who were fully committed and I quickly realized I would never be

They’re so pretty when they’re all painted! And I was hoping my son would take to it.

But my Dark Heresy starter box sits in my garage shamefully half painted.

I'm Ralph at your game night

Don’t worry, there are legions of dudes ready to tell you how to play, every move to make, when to roll, what numbers you rolled, add them up for you, maybe explain the results, maybe not. And then tell you how great you were at the game after.
i am not at this level of nerd yet...i stopped developing around Risk for board games and the Witcher 3 for video games...

Gosh, I wonder why the Barbie movie just popped into my head. 🤣🤣🤣

WH40K can get incredibly expensive. The place I play has a lot of games going. The main driver is the game is WYSIWYG to an insane degree, and driven so by the fan base. If your mini doesn't have the right color hand grenade, it doesn't have that weapon. Scale up. The company's money is based around mini sales, so driving you to get everything is the goal. And they change rules so you need to rebuild your army from the ground up again. And Warhammer players, either flavor, are some of the most anal-retentive rules lawyers I have ever known when they get an army on the table. It is encouraged in the fandom, and draws like-minded people. It can get ugly.

Wargame wise, I have played a lot of different games, but at heart I am an old (old) BattleTech player. There is some crossover, but BattleTech is specifically built to not be miniature dependent. I cannot paint a mini to save my life, so I use printed cardboard Mechs on plastic bases (the ones that came with the original boxes back in 1985.) (I have played with nickels and post-it notes on occasion-- which is suggested in the rule books). I remember setting up against a 40K player with some beautiful painted minis in a lance on lance pickup game. He looked in horror and asked "what are those?" I just smiled. "We're Team Banzai, and we're better than you."

40K is, "we have a mini for that." BT is, "yes, we have a rule for that." Two different philosophies, but 40k players have fun, and that is the point.

Ah, but the lore of 40K, and the computer games? Those I love.

I love BT for the lore and history, but I am a D&D nerd at heart and soul. Been playing since I was 12, and my high school group still has a 1st Ed game that we have been playing for 40 years (think Malazan, if you know it. Some low level characters, some insanley powerful characters. 1E was great for that.) We just play online now.

Do they? Or are they like League of Legends players, constantly shifting between "fuck you and every generation of your family" and "oh thank god it's over".

Ah, but the lore of 40K, and the computer games? Those I love.
