So, apparently when someone goes into a mental fugue and doesn't recognize their spouse standing before them, the most correct response is to tell them "they'll be back."

That just feels so wrong. But, I readily admit that aging and the correlated ailments were never my focus or forte.

It’s hard, but you’ll get better at. I know you don’t want to, but it’s where you are now and it unfortunately happens to many people.
Get help if it’s too much, or when it is, there are caretaker support groups and such, people for respite care when needed.
I know it’s hard to ask for help. I’m not great at it. We have a completely bonkers group of supporters.
The group is non traditional, gardeners, neighbors, their children’s friends, local cpa, a lawyer, a car service driver, the director of senior service and their children.
I’ve found having photo album with photos labeled from early life to current helps. You can go through it with them, and usually by the time they get to current photos, they will recognize their spouse. It maybe a short time but they’re still in there, they are just lost. And yeah reassurance like “ they’ll be back” can help, since it’s better than them realizing in the moment they have forgotten and feeling mortified, which I’ve seen happen.
Another we use is Amazon echos throughout the house in case they get lost, with photos of family slowly being displayed. These are also set up like panic buttons, as well as play music they like. They are great remembering songs and music.
