Does anybody here take them seriously?

There have been criminal conspiracies in real life -- Watergate, the Lincoln assassination -- but there were no widespread theories about them before they came to light. Conspiracy theories almost always turn out to be irrational nonsense, like Qanon, or Illuminati theories, or stuff about International Jewish conspiracies.

Here's a pretty comprehensive list of CTs. How many of these do you think will ever turn out to have any substance?

The subheading Just plain whacko conspiracy theories cracked me up.

Of course, just about every theory in the entire list is wacko, although they do make for humorous reading.

The remarkable thing is that the Republican Party has become the Conspiracy Nut Party. Who knew that a majority of American voters are wacko?

It would come as no surprise to Kurt Andersen -- see his book Fantasyland.

Americans are optimistic, because history has been good to us. Optimism is good for keeping up morale in times of crisis.

But the downside of optimism is credulity. Americans will believe anything. Only in America could a transparent charlatan like Joseph Smith or L. Ron Hubbard have found enough followers to start a church.

The Democrat Party has cornered the market on conspiracy theories.

You don't hear bullshit about election-rigging or voter fraud or the "Deep State" from them.
We hear the childish wailing about the return of Hitler, fascists, the fall of democracy, the phony threats to democracy, half the nation being racists, sexist, garbage, deplorables, in cahoots with Putin, and other ovarian hysterics. All of it happening while you conspire to rig the elections.

None of that is CT.

See, now that's CT.

The Democrat Party
Democrat Party:

The Democrat Party (AKA the Democrat Socialist Party, the Radical Liberal™ Party, or the Chinese Communist Socialist Deep-State Media Woke Cancel Culture SJW BLM Antifa Party) is a political party that many Republicans seem to think is their primary opposition.[1]

Unlike the Democratic Party, the Democrat Party is made up entirely of Jewish, homosexual, communistic, tree-hugging, pot-smoking, Satan-worshiping, reptilian, Christ-hating Chinese spies intent on confiscating guns, destroying the family, indoctrinating schoolchildren into Marxism and homosexuality, painting every freeway lane with HOV diamonds, raising taxes to 100%, aborting every unborn fetus, conducting all official state business in drag, and negotiating for snuggles with the leaders of the Axis of Evil.

Another important difference between the Democrat Party and the Democratic Party is that the "Democrat Party" does not exist.

The use of "Democrat Party" as an epithet by Republicans has arguably led to oversensitivity among some Democratic activists who think saying "Democrat activists" instead of "Democratic activists" is an intentional slur. Saying "Democrat politicians", "Democrat-controlled legislature", "Democrat voters", "Democrat senator", "Democrat representative", "Democrat governor", "Democrat candidate", "Democrat president", and so on tends to raise hackles among some people these days. Although these are still incorrect, they are often said out of ignorance and not out of malice, sometimes even by Democrats themselves. Although it was still used religiously by Donald Trump and his apologists, such as Rush Limbaugh and substitutes. Also worth pointing out is the fact that Democrats commonly say "vote Democrat", instead of "vote Democratic".

On a serious note, the term is not limited to contemporary usage; partisan Republicans as far back as 1889 (yes, before the Southern Strategy) employed "Democrat Party" as a pejorative in speeches denouncing their opponents as rebels and supporters of free trade.[2]

If Alex Jones becomes Trump's press secretary, we're going to be hearing a LOT of CTs.

(Snopes says that rumor is "unfounded.")
