It's called the liberal arts for a reason.

Not for a political reason. The seven liberal arts (logic, grammar, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music) of ancient and medieval education were called that because they were the education appropriate to a free man, defined as one who did not have to work for a living. Medicine and architecture were at one point considered for inclusion in the curriculum, but rejected as being too practical.
