Doubtful that batteries can explode like that—especially a battery as small as one that would be in a pager. Lithium batteries—when overheated or punctured—can do some damage, but they don’t blow up like an explosive.

all i know is what the tech peeps were saying on the various news reports today

i suppose it's also possible this wasn't Israel, but another faction seeking to disrupt/disempower hezbollah enough to allow a more peace-seeking amenable force to take control. maybe.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Israel's Mossad spy agency planted a small amount of explosives inside 5000 Taiwan-made pagers ordered by Lebanese group Hezbollah months before Tuesday's detonations, a senior Lebanese security source and another source told Reuters.

But the senior Lebanese source said the devices had been modified by Israel's spy service "at the production level."

"The Mossad injected a board inside of the device that has explosive material that receives a code. It's very hard to detect it through any means. Even with any device or scanner," the source said.

According to Sky News Arabia; Mossad was able to Inject a Compound of Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN) into the Batteries of the Pagers that Hezbollah began using around February, before they even arrived in the hands of Hezbollah Members. PETN explodes when heated, so probably a firmware update in order to allow the voltage controller or something to overheat the lithium ion batteries and trigger the explosive. The explosions look like shape charges directed toward the person wearing the pager - in the clips you can see people right next to the targets are unharmed. Pagers are connected to Telecom networks so that part is pretty straightforward, by comparison to everything else they did.

was just watching a woman speaking about the events and the casualties, plus the most likely way to compromise the pagers and have them all explode at the same time was to hack and introduce such a virus. The other option was for small explosive devices to be incorporated into these specific pagers.
