Below the belt

it is unclear about civilian casualties given the places these devices exploded and how many... in cars, supermarkets, on the streets and so on

apparently the most likely scenario is the pagers were hacked with a virus that caused the lithium batteries to overheat and explode.

The explosions are too large for it to be just the batteries. The speculation I’ve seen is supply chain infiltration that smuggled small charges into the new pagers that Hezbollah recently bought.

I’ve seen no reports of civilian casualties, despite people standing right next to the targets when the bomb went off.

There is videos of them going off, you can see the person hurt and everyone else fine.
I doubt it was a virus, from a tech aspect, I can’t think how one would use a virus with a pager, more like an explosive in it.
The real question is why did Hezbollah refurbished all their pagers and who had access to them.
I understand why they switched from cell phones to pagers.

was just watching a woman speaking about the events and the casualties, plus the most likely way to compromise the pagers and have them all explode at the same time was to hack and introduce such a virus. The other option was for small explosive devices to be incorporated into these specific pagers.

and.. hi, Noor!

So this is a real thing. :)

These is video on twitter, but it could still be propaganda.
No one is taking credit so far.
Supposedly, They got the Iran envoy who had minor injuries but is in hospital under observation.

Hard to tell anymore. :)

Likely a directional micro-charge explosive.

If the Hezbollah terrorists, etc, had the pager clipped to their pocket or belt, then the charge would have likely exploded inward toward the clip and the body of the wearer. The clip might have even become a piece of shrapnel propelled by the explosive charge.

Devious / ingenious bit of spy craft.

Side note:

The fact that the Hezbollah terrorists, etc, recently replaced their pagers suggests that they were planning something big. This development very likely set back whatever plans the Hezbollah terrorists had in a major way.

BEIRUT—Pagers carried by thousands of Hezbollah operatives exploded at about the same time Tuesday afternoon, leaving more than 2,700 injured and eight dead in an unprecedented event that struck across Lebanon.

The affected pagers were from a new shipment that the group received in recent days, people familiar with the matter said. A Hezbollah official said hundreds of fighters had such devices, speculating that malware may have caused the devices to explode. The official said some people felt the pagers heat up and disposed of them before they burst.
Michael Horowitz, the head of intelligence at Le Beck International, a security and risk management consulting firm based in the Middle East, said the cause was likely malware that caused the pagers’ batteries to overheat and explode or a charge placed in the devices and detonated remotely.

so, according to residents, not all the devices exploded at the same time but rather over the course of half an hour

A Reuters journalist saw ambulances rushing through the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut amid widespread panic. Residents said explosions were taking place even 30 minutes after the initial blasts. The security source added that devices were also exploding in the south of Lebanon.

Regional broadcasters carrying CCTV footage which showed what appeared to be a small handheld device placed next to a grocery store cashier where an individual was paying spontaneously exploding. In other footage, an explosion appeared to knock out someone standing at a fruit stand at a market area.

BREAKING UPDATE: 9 Killed, 2,800 Wounded, Mostly Hezbollah Terrorists, as Pagers They Use to Communicate Explode Across the Country

by Jim Hᴏft Sep. 17, 2024 10:20 am

UPDATE: Lebanon’s Health Minister reports that eight people have been killed and 2,750 injured due to exploding pagers across the country, per ABC News.

Over 1,000 individuals, mostly Hezbollah terrorists, were wounded when the pagers they use for communication exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The incident, confirmed by security sources, is being called the “biggest security breach” the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror network has faced since its ongoing war with Israel began.

The explosions, reported by Reuters, occurred at 3:45 p.m. local time. Panic spread as Hezbollah-controlled areas in southern Beirut and other parts of the country were hit with explosions that lasted for over an hour.

Doubtful that batteries can explode like that—especially a battery as small as one that would be in a pager. Lithium batteries—when overheated or punctured—can do some damage, but they don’t blow up like an explosive.
