The stakes are not only high for the candidates. This is a high risk, high reward situation for bumbling stumbling CNN. It’s ratings are in the toilet, it’s replaced CEOs three times in less than 3 years, the town hall with Trump last year precipitated the firing of the last CEO, and various hosts in recent years have caused a great deal of controversy and embarrassment. Add to that a new format that’s never been tried before. All that said, this should be a ratings bonanza if they don’t fuck it up.
The network is on track to have its lowest-rated month since 1991 in the prime-time 25-to-54-year-old demographic with just 94,000 viewers, according to Nielsen data, though that may change after Thursday’s debate. Presidential debates traditionally attract millions of viewers in the demographic.
