The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

Happy Saturday from Out West. Some of the household critters were damned happy to see me. The youngest tortie decided that I needed to be inspected and supervised, so that's been going on since 0300. The boy Lab came down to check on me several times, too. The horse was an apple monster, pushy and everything. Good thing he stays outside. The girl Lab helped me finish breakfast, but then she sits at my feet whenever I'm at the table and she's inside. And HellaTstorm blew through, too. It's soggy here and all the bodies of water are very full.

Hope to be here for Azalea Season of '25 . . . .

Good morning WT. It seems you already had a busy morning with your critters. Thunderstorms forecast here a little later and then the big ones tomorrow evening. Oh well, it is spring. Going out to have brunch with my girlfriend arouund 9 am. In the meantime, going for a walk with the old dog soon. I am going to be low key today.

Yep. 500 miles to get here from work and then 650 to get back to the house today. A bit extravagant, maybe, but I can. The truck got 22MPG loaded through the mountains, so I ain't bitching.

Out to feed horses here innaminnit.

Good morning all. I am mobile but not moving fast. My butt muscle hurts!!! I think it is going to be a couch day! Sitting at a diner for breakfast and it hurts to sit!
I am going to start a sign up sheet. So all you lovely ladies can get in line to rub the sore muscle. Lol

Morning all.

On the run. Two lawns to mow today. The big ones.

My push mower that I I’ve had for 14 years died yesterday. Thing doesn’t owe me a cent. Four lawns x 30 mows a year x 14 years = 1680 Lawn mowings. I use my tractor for the big lawns but that thing was a runner. Sorry to see it go. I’m not gonna get rid of it, but I’ll see what’s up with it later this year when lawn mowing season is over.

I’m gonna get a new one today.

I like equipment that just goes and goes.

Cleaning up the yard and farm today. Company tomorrow. See my mom on Monday.

Try to actually get a little downtime in this weekend.

There are 2 kinds of equipment - runners and work-on-ers. Basically? Fuck the 2nd kind. My current mower - which I paid too much for - started on the very first pull this season, and it lives outside under the wheel barrow. No special treatment. It's maybe 3 years old, maybe 4. My yard isn't hard, but I need a runner. It replaced a John Deere which was given to me after it wouldn't start on Year #2 from its former owner. Ethanol crud in the carb. I bought a new one and it (eventually) started after I installed it. I had to fight it every season to get it to run. I hit the neighbor's steel water meter closet and thought I had busted the crank, but it was the block that held the blade to the crank. I used some ingenuity and fixed it. Then I looked at it one day, decided I had had quite enough of it, pushed it out to the back alley where things go to disappear, and dropped a few shekels on the new one. Haven't regretted it for a second.

Fed the horses, put up a fence panel (the landlady has a killer Red Tool Brand battery stapler for just such a task), and took the farm truck (my former daily driver now that it's 17) for a test ride to make sure it's still up to snuff. Guess what? It's a runner!!!

I’m with ya on good quality equipment. My lawn tractor and farm tractor just keep going. (Knock on steel)

My stihl chainsaws? Always start. Blower and whacker? Always start.

I learned the hard way several years ago that if you don’t run the equipment every so often, the carbs get all gunked up w ethanol stuff. So I start all my power equipment once a month and let it run for 10 minutes or so. Even in July, I start the snowblower.

When ya need it ya can’t be fucking around.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend everyone!! Don’t forget the spirit of Memorial Day… those who have given their lives for this nation…

Stihl!!! Nothing more needs be said.

The guy messaged back about the old Allis-Chalmers. Maybe thew landlady can go check it out. More the seller than the tractor.

Getting ready to (fixin' ta) load up and get on the road. All day long. Let's hope all the idiots got their driving in yesterday.

Thank you it’s the least our family can do
And the ceremony on Monday is a solemn affair
It is supposed to be a solemn affair, not really the big party we’ve made it. Can’t make money on solemn though…

Thank you for placing the flags. It has special meaning to so many. All except one of my immediate family members who served made it back, including me.

He was the copilot of a B-17 making a bombing run on Nazi Sub Pens in Saint-Nazaire. The initial run was obscured by clouds, and so they made the turn back through the flack. A large squadron of Focke Wulf 190’s attacked the formation and his bird was either hit by flack or the fighters. Last known reports were two engines smoking and the Fortress was losing altitude making for the Chanel. The aircraft and crew were never recovered. All listed as MIA.

Here we have Remembrance Sunday in November. In our village we have a service at the Memorial. Since the 100th anniversary of the First World War I instigated a second service. At sunset we light a Beacon on the Quay End. A junior piper plays and children light the beacon. We read the names of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It is both a matter of respect and making sure our children understand what past generations went through.

My grandfather was in the trenches of Ypres, my father in Lancaster bombers and my mother recounts hiding under the stairs in the blitz in Liverpool and being thrown across the room by a German bomb that hit two houses down the block…just aged 6,

I thank God I have never witnessed such horrors! 😢
