Day 16: A song you would play at 3am

As some of you know, I suffer from rather severe insomnia. Some times I don't sleep for days. After a while, day becomes night, and life becomes dreamlike. A cover, a fog, a veil spread across my mind, as I drift in and out of lucidity.

Oddly enough, nights are better than days. The little hours are when I can relax, because I know the world is asleep. The stress fades away, as there's nothing else I should be doing. Still wide awake, but at least I can think.

The world goes quiet
A calm falls over me
Real life fades away

Dire Straits - Fade to Black

Cool Rider

If I am awake these days at 3am and am able to play music then it's probably because I'm drunk. And when I'm drunk I get nostalgic and start convincing myself I'm super cool with all the best moves - like the amazing Michelle Pfeiffer strutting her stuff as Stephanie Zinone in the far superior Grease movie

If I’m up at three on the weekend, there will be booze etc involved I’m often watching a free to air overnight nonstop music show on our national broadcaster (and has done so every Friday and Saturday since early 1987!) hosted by bands or artists that play songs they love and their own, it runs from around 11:30 pm to 7 am and I have attached a link to last Saturday nights playlist just too give you an idea (not to name a second song etc. song haha) https://www.abc.net.au/rage/playlist/saturday-night-13-april-2024-on-abc-tv/103702802 ..if I’m not into the hosts music..I’ll play my own stuff..and at this hour, it’s going to be loud and nostalgic to start and maybe fade into something mellow.

Stuff like:

I’m the one- The Descendents (a great video clip too!)

I LOVE this movie so much. She was my second film crush. And unlike Andromeda from Clash of the Titans, she remains one to this day.

I often play this in the middle of the night when the struggles come. Hits home too.

I've been living with a curse
Combing through the pages of my youth
There's a million soggy miles
Soaking through the soles of my shoes

And I've been staying up all night
I don't give a damn to sleep anymore
My eyelids are heavy
But my dreams don't sing like before

3:59 - John Moreland

One of the things I really love about this thread, beyond the music, is the everything else. Histories, or stories, or just little bits of info. For this one, I love that we all have different views at three AM. MoreLikeASong is trying to sleep again. LavenderSilk is waiting for magic. So am I, but in a different way. Whiskeyjack is watching TV. Monkey-boy is trying to get bail. Onanismaddict is deep into The Illuminati. V is thinking. And several of us are drunk, and either listening or playing music. And as Mo_Bandy points out, it is often when the struggles, all of them, come out to fight.

In the long dark night of the soul, it may always be three AM, but every 3 AM is different.

Well, I worked the overnights for over a decade. Sometimes it seems forever. Long enough anyway that my circadian rhythm is whacky.

The other insomniacs have pretty well covered the "I need to sleep, damn it" vibe, or "the clubs are closed, I wonder where we can get breakfast" vibe. So, here's a little something for the night workers that have hit the wall and need to stay awake a couple more hours to finish the shift.

Thank you for that. I love your words. 💋 I agree the little 👀 inside everyone's 🧠 is the best part about this thread. ♥️
