I was just having this conversation at work. Completely agree. We have too many old fuddy duddies making the decisions. They didn't think a nose piercing was "professional" and I heard a complaint that our receptionist's hair is too "orange" (she dyes it red trying to match the color of her youth). So ridiculous.

The whole notion of professional clothing strikes me as strange. Just because you buy a $5,000 suit doesn't mean you're any less evil for beating up bums for their change! You can look professional all you want and still be a horrible human being. To me, personal values (or what passes for them these days are more important, even in a professional context.

You can look professional all you want and still be a horrible human being. To me, personal values (or what passes for them these days are more important, even in a professional context.

Pre-pandemic, I wore the "IBM uniform" four times a week: crisp white shirt, black or dark shaded blue tie, black or navy blue slacks, black shoes, black socks. Our then Director of IT Operations mandated it.

While I appreciate that it is the employer who owns the company and their right to “present it” in whatever way they want …

That doesn’t leave room for a company to hire authentic people who are true to themselves… why should someone have to hide who they are for 8 hours a day?

We need to change our minds on the idea of “professionalism” means we are all automations who all look, act, talk, etc the same … when the reality is we are all individuals and everyone chooses to express themselves differently. Some with makeup, hair, piercings, clothing, tattoos, etc.

I agree. But the company is doing what it thinks the people/society want.
And the people in charge control what everyone thinks people want.
Until that changes. And we elect tattooed, pierced leaders, with pink, purple or blue hair.
Then it will remain the same.
