Less Than Half of San Francisco Students Are High-School Ready

Less Than Half of San Francisco Students Are High-School Ready. More Than a Fourth Are Chronically Absent.

San Francisco Public Schools released data last month painting a bleak picture of academic achievement in the famously liberal city.

For the 2021-2022 school year, just 47 percent of eighth graders were deemed ready for high school. Twenty-eight percent of students in the San Francisco Unified School District are "chronically absent"—a proportion that has doubled since the 2019-2020 school year. Two-thirds of African-American students fall into that category.

Despite the declining academic performance, San Francisco city officials have debated whether or not to rename schools or remove murals dedicated to important figures in American history. Three progressive members of the San Francisco school board were recalled earlier this year after parents opposed the district's focus on social justice issues over education.

In English Language Arts, 42 percent of students in the district scored below proficient, with 72 percent of African Americans and 66 percent of "Latinx" at reading levels deemed unsatisfactory for their grade levels.

San Francisco schools in 2021 refused to disclose the percentage of students ready for college or a career after graduation. The district has yet to release data on the percentage of students on track to graduate and is withholding its 2022 report until the following year, according to the performance analysis report released in June.

Despite the above testifying to Gavin's incompetence at governance he has the gall to presume to run for President.
American exceptionalism.

social justice matters! education does not!
Ah. You're the one who bumped the useless necro thread for no good reason.

Guess we're gonna see more of this headassed bullshit from pressed nimrods needing distraction buzz as this election year drags on. 🤷‍♂️

Pretty sure CA has the biggest income inequality but in fairness our numbers are probably REALLY skewed when you factor in Hollywood and Silicon Valley.

That said the educated most likely vote democrat. This is why Republicans constantly berate higher education and are part of a never ending quest to destroy public education however. Dems want to improve education in America and lower costs for college.
But yet it's the more intelligent Democrats that are destroying the state and driving people and businesses out.

Note: No Republican has been elected to statewide office since 2006. You run everything and it's all going to hell.

You don't even punctuate properly, Jack

The fact the left will defend the horrific hellhole that city is shows in the end they don't care about kids, the homeless, addiction, poverty or anything other than arguing with people who point it out and sucking the dick of their infallible overlords. Pelosi lives in a multi million dollar home looking out over a third world city, but oh, those republicans!

And during that period, California became the #6 economy of the entire universe.

Oh, how is Kevin doing in his district?

So true and her nephew has been the prime mover in the destruction of that state for some years now. I read today that San Francisco appointed the first non-citizen to its election board. She been in the country since 2019. Speaking of Pelosi I see that the left has dumped a load of manure in front of her house because she supported Israel. In California, it seems they really do talk shit.

There are some businesses moving out but most are stuck here for one reason or another. We've had ONE year without positive population growth and you guys keep screaming that there is a mass exodus. Believe me when I say none of us are gonna cry if people move out. It should bring down housing costs. Probably not because that's not how capitalism works. They would rather have empty houses and homelessness than lower prices on housing. We could fix that nation wide but you know any action we take against it would be called socialism. You'd scream we were seconds from sending you to Alaska to mine gold or something. We can't really fix it on that end. I don't really want them to lax environmental controls too much.

Yeah, that Republican won a recall vote because we were already in a bad spot and the one major thing he did made things worse. Though overall he was a more than adequate governor and easily better than Newsom. And while one could argue Arnold COULD run for president and I wish the fucker would just so we can take it to the Supreme Court that's a tale for a different day.

What have the many Republicans in California done to address these issues?

Ignoring that San Fran isn't really a hellhole it is in rough state and I'm a little shocked they let it get like that. Oakland yes, nobody is spending money helping minorities, primarily blacks. But affluent whites? What the actual fuck? However we very much care about kids, homeless, addiction, poverty and we actually show it with our actions. We raised the minimum wage, we are building shelters but part of the problem is we don't allow drugs or alcohol in the shelters which just means many homeless stay homeless which makes helping them so much harder. We're so hard up not to look soft on crime that we walk ourselves into the same traps over and over and over again.

Our infallible overlords? Who the fuck are they? Nobody actually likes Hillary. Whether or not we think she was qualified, I think she was overqualified if such a thing exists for that office. That being said she has slightly more charisma than an onion. Thanks to close to 40 years of constant attacks its is impossible to sort what's true, what isn't and what she really didn't have much choice in.

I don't give a shit about Pelosi's house. This is a major fuck up the Right makes on every issue. Whether its that Pelosi can't talk about homelessness with a multimillion dollar home (which in California means fuck all) or so and so celebrity obviously doesn't believe in global warming because they bought a home in Martha's Vineyard or they flew in a private jet.

San Francisco is ground zero for the battle between NIMBY and YIMBY. People are leaving California because there’s not enough housing. That raises the cost of living and exacerbates homelessness.

The solution is to build more housing. Reform zoning, eliminate parking minimums, streamline the permit process, and let the market take over.

It’s not really a left vs right issue. The left NIMBYs are just as much a problem as the right NIMBYs. But the YIMBYs are exclusively on the left.

I will second most of this. The only thing is I'm not certain that the market alone is a solution. I haven't been to San Fran in about 15 years and I wasn't driving around a whole lot either. That said where I live there are a lot of houses that have been vacant for years. There are still retail locations that have been empty since the recession. Artificial scarcity is a thing that while often difficult to prove happens in most industries.

Whoever builds houses it’s a good thing. I want more private development AND more public housing. We should change the laws to encourage developers to build more cheap, dense housing.

I don't care who does the building. I propose starting with "If you can't find a tenant in under 12 months you must reduce your asking cost. Eventually it will force them to rent or sell. Over the years we have allowed too few people with too much power.
