As a follow-up - apparently it was racist to ban menthol cigarettes, because it was said - anecdotally that they were preferred by blacks (and possibly also Hmong tribesfolk - yes, they are real). As a corollary, therefore, one might consider it racist to save them from lung cancer, emphysema, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. One is damned if one does and damned if one does not, which I think is what Catch 22 was all about. When asked if I am a racist (which is extremely rare) I say - no - I am a culturalist. It's behaviour that repels me, not the group that any particular person is of. (I know I should never end a sentence with a preposition)
