The other day on Facebook, one of the Republicans I graduated high school with posted a video by Candace Owens proporting to take down climate change. When I pointed out that Candace also believes the moon landing was faked, my nutburger Republican friends launched to defend that position. Because Candace says we never went to the moon they believe it! No matter how stupid the issue deplorables WILL defend it. When I pointed out that if we had faked the moon landing the Soviets would have exposed us and won the Cold War instantly. Etc. Today I got this unhinged diatribe:

I'm honestly speechless How can the International Space Station be real yet it is "impossible to leave our atmosphere" BOTH be true? "Do your own research" apparently means "Search until you find what you are looking for and run with that and ONLY that."

Majortypo has 450 posts in a decade but says he's an "active" member. An average of 45 posts per year (or LESS THAN ONE PER WEEK) isn't "active" it's the opposite. Especially for someone who has published stories on the site.

This sounds like marketing to fund another moon trip. The space race was one of the most expensive efforts the US has ever done. Doing another one would also be expensive, and paid with taxes. An astronaut hasn't left low earth orbit since the last moon landing because there's no point left in trying. The moon is just a lifeless rock. We can't live there or bring anything more than expensive souvenirs back. But progressives still want to do it as a symbol of progress, a step towards Mars and more space exploration, because they can't imagine a world without always expanding to new frontiers.

In progressive terms, space exploration is wasteful, anti-green, selfish, etc. The tremendous amount of fuel needed to make and test giant rockets and then finally launch a manned lunar or Mars trip could keep many lights on in countries that are currently struggling to get along without Russian fuel.

So you hinged your defence of the moon landing on the assumption that people would have believed the Soviets claim that it didn't happen? During the height of the cold war? Why would people believe anything the Soviets said? Do you have examples of such cases?

Probably not the best example. Richard Nixon told the public that the Vietnam War and years of heavy bombing were successful. That he wasn't involved in Watergate. That we didn't intervene in Chile's elections. The Shah of Iran was a peace loving kind and gentle leader.. etc...

Nixon did lie more often than not.
