My point is that I've never seen such a concentration of incest obsession as I've seen on Lit.
The largest category is logically the broadest: Erotic Couplings. But a surprisingly close second is Incest & Taboo, far ahead of Mature, Gay, BDSM etc.
Incest is overrepresented here, and I think it's kind of odd, and statistically odd.

I don't understand it either. I sure never had any interest in a brother. I thought interest in incest was sort of limited, but obviously I was wrong.

I think incest is overdone because it is lazy writing.

There are certain stories that do lend themselves to having an incestuous bent, but they are pretty rare. What I see, is writers wanting impact and surprise, and instead of using creative plot twists, they just turn to incest as a way to instantly... and lazily... raise the stakes or tension in the story. Equally, it is the same with character relations. It takes a fair amount of wordsmithing to get two strangers from their first meet up to having sex. Having characters already knowing each other by being family is easier. I mean all it takes is half a sentence...

"I have always had feelings for you", and BANG; it is a plausible erotic story.

It is just lazy writing, and why it is so popular.

But that is just human habit. Look at the amount of series done on here. Try writing (10) stand alone short erotic stories, and then (10) stories in a series. The latter is so easy to do because you do not have to think of characters, character names, character arcs, back stories, etc. There is very little creativity. In a series Tom and Jane hold hands, walk out of the house, and soon the two are in the next sex-scenario.

A site like this just gets a lot of what is easy to do. It's too bad, a lot of good writers could improve their writing skills if they would challenge themselves a little more.

My take on the subject is that it provides a shortcut to drama for a writer.
People who most definitely shouldn't be doing it... start doing it.
This makes for conflict and shame and regret and angst, etc.

Otherwise the story is just a romance: two people meet and start having sex.

Incest is only a concept of social conditioning, so it's fun to break that taboo.

I honestly don't think so.
I have thought about it.
In terms of abuse, I think familial abuse happens because someone exploits a vulnerable person, often in a closed, private situation.
It doesn't really matter to an abuser if they are related, proximity and opportunity are more convenient for them.

Most of the stories here are pretty silly:
"Hey Mom, you've got lovely big tits!" "Well, why don't you spunk over them, son!"

Having written a few incest stories, I find it is what people want to read. I get a lot of feedback from users who enjoy what I write. Do I have incestuous thoughts or desires myself about members of my family? No. But people do, and even if they never live out those fantasies for real, they can live out their fantasies in secret. More power to them. I also find that some of our readers are shut-ins or for whatever reason, not capable or able to have a normal sex life. Fantasy is what they have.

I DO have one rule when writing a story involving incest. You will never see me write a Father/Daughter story. My wife having been a victim of incest/molestation by her father, I find it tainted and dirty to write about a man being sexually active with his own children. WHY I find it OK to write about a Mother/Son or Mother/Daughter incest relationship is that a mother tends to be closer to her children. More loving and caring. A son's first and only true love is his mother. A daughter is often just a younger version of her mother. There are bonds there that cannot be broken. A man's closest access to women are his mother and sisters when he reaches that point where he is curious sexually. It's natural for him to investigate the female form and what have you with his female family members. He spies on his sisters or gets aroused by what he has come to know because it is there, right in front of him. That first reveal of erotic scents and sights, sounds and feels come from his family. Women can experience the same.

Just ignore the subject and find something that you enjoy reading about. There are TONS of subjects in which to choose from by some pretty damn good writers on this site. Find your fantasy source and go wild.

Personally, it started as a thought experiment on morality. Beyond the issues of manipulative relationships, inbreeding etc, where is the problem? Remove those negative aspects and you mostly end up with a fairly simple relationship between two or more individuals. They merely happen to be related. If anything, the fact that the characters can disregard that can help to show the depths of their love/lust somewhat more easily.

Out of 13 stories that I've worked on to date (though none complete enough to publish), 8 have some kind of incestuous goings on, to varying extents. Though, only five individual families are involved, all appearing in multiple stories, often with others from outside the family. Playing with each other isn't necessarily the limit of any of their interests.

But in each case, their particular motivations for starting the relationship are quite different from each other, from enjoyable accidents to very much intentional seductions. For example, in one particular family, the eldest two grew up essentially taking care of the younger siblings and each other - effectively acting as a couple in most other respects aside from sexually.

For another, the younger sister fucked the elder's boyfriend behind her back, leading to the older girl angrily making the former into her toy instead - much to her surprise and enjoyment. But every time, you could strip away the incest and still have essentially the same kind of relationship beneath - it's just an extra layer of twisted added on top of the basic theme.

It's not like making characters related even really saved me time or story length in the setup of them either, though as some have mentioned, it can - it just fit who they are and their particular desires better than if they hadn't been in these cases.

All of that said, in spite of so much of my own writing containing incest, were one of my sisters to turn up at my door begging me to fuck her... Yeah, no thanks, time for a Monty Python-esque "Run away!"

I think part of the reason so many people enjoy reading incestuous stories despite having no interest or intention of pursuing an incestuous relationship themselves, is the mental disconnection it allows - you can imagine, but without the temptation of really trying it.

Knowing you'd never go through with it, but having the freedom to play the scenario out regardless, similar to watching a horror film, knowing you'd never want to do the things portrayed yourself. Those fixated on horror have any desire to go further than watching, and I suspect the same is true here. It's the thrill of imagining without real consequence that draws people to the subject.

The last few years much is published about illegal sexual relations between clergymen/teachers/trainers/employers with their pupils/employees.
But I have the impression that incestuous sexual harassment is at least as common.
Only after my father died, I discovered that for years he had had oral sex with my elder sister with her consent, as far as one can speak of consent. He also tried to do things with my younger sister, but she resisted and had to lock her door all the time when dad was home and mom went shopping. That was more than 40 years ago and she still lives with the trauma. He also did things to me that should not be done but I was so horny then and let it happen.

Incest of parents with their children is no fun and can cause much damage.

However, an author can create a story where everybody is happily doing these things.

I am surprised there isn't more of an appreciation for this genre, not for the shock value, the taboo value, the easy-sex value, but for specifically: Two people who are already incredibly close and loving to each other, know each other as well as anyone could know anyone - like siblings- - deciding to ADD physicality and sexuality to their existing deep relationship.

The DEEPENING of a loving relationship by adding pleasure, rather than simply a taboo/shock thing.
