He really chafed under Lee didn't he. When i was reading about him he seemed like the type that knew what to do but higher ups wouldn't listen. It was friends with Grant before the war and rekindled friendship after.....
Yes and no. Longstreet was a "good soldier" who followed orders even when he felt they were stupid. Gettysburg really strained his relationship with Lee, particularly Picketts charge. When the best defensive tactician of the war told him the charge had no chance, Lee should have listened.

Longstreet got a bad rap among southern historians for a long time. Part of it was due to a tendency to scapegoat Lee's subordinates rather than admitting that Lee was a good general, not a great general. The second reason was Longstreet quickly reconciled with the Union. He hadn't been keen on the rebellion to begin with and felt that it was his duty to serve his country once the war was over.

Ahh i see.... I did see that he was in the US army for 20ish years before resigning to fight for the confederate army. I wonder if he would have been the lead general instead of Lee if we would have had a longer war or a different outcome. The north had a lot more industry so there is that

Probably not. The southern generals were based on seniority and how well they sucked up to Jefferson Davis. Lee probably wouldn't have gotten command of the army of Northern Virginia if his predecessor hadn't been wounded. Prior to his taking over, Lee was not highly thought of, having been badly beaten early in the war (Lee's loss had allowed west Virginia to split from the rest of the state and join the union). This loss earned Lee the nickname of "Granny Lee."

The battles in the east were militarily insignificant for the most part. The war was won in the west.

Huh.... isn't it funny what you think you know until you learn what really happened....

Question that I am sure been asked an answered a hundred time, but I'm new so forgive me. What is your favorite forums and chats here? Being new I want to know where to go.

It's a matter of taste. Please be respectful of all listers. Lurk in a forum or topic for a while if what is posted is in your vein of interest and you can contribute something feel free to do so,

Maybe a good joke or meme.

Yeah. Doing research instead of just regurgitating "what everybody knows" leads to fascinating atuff.

Grant didn't fear Lee at all, unlike many Union generals. He had greater respect for the general Lee had replaced(Joeseph E. Johnston) than he did for Lee.

I have read a bit about grant and it is pretty interesting.... his family came over in the 1600s and settled this country. He had family that fought in the French and Indian and revolutionary wars.... and after the Civil War he put policies in place to protect African Americans. I want to say one of his grandparents was an abolitionist.....

Can’t believe I missed this thread!

58 here, been around a long time, mainly to write but I do wander into the forums sometimes.

Don’t consider myself old unless I have to move fast…that ain’t happening anymore!

Married to a Litster who is CONSIDERABLY 😂older than I am, but I don’t think he has found his way over here.

Going to go back and read through, hopefully I’m not the old lady in the room!
I am elizaloo's CONSIDERABLY older husband at 65 years old. I really enjoy when she visits me at the nursing home and pushes my wheel chair out into the nice weather and we walk around for a while. That and her dabbing the occasional drool from my chin. She is so gentle when she feeds me my apple sauce too! 😁 😁 😁

Okay I am teasing a bit here. I am a happy, healthy, enjoying life 65 years old.

Damn it's cold outside. I just got in from breaking up the last of the ice on my driveway and I'm cold. As soon as I get some coffee in me and warm up, I'm getting naked, putting on some rock and start cleaning.

My favorite story about Grant is when he first was appointed General.

His uncle wrote him to congratulate him. He ended his letter by telling him to try not to get fired this time because being a general sounded like a pretty good job.

Hahaha.... I was reading that he was broke for a while...til he went back to the army when war was imminent....

Grant was a bulldog. He wasn't even in the Army at the start of the war, He was working in a store and enlisted. Being from the academy he was able to get a commission. He fought in the western campaign along the Mississippi ad made a name for himself taking the offensive. Won at Vicksburg right before Gettysburg took place.

At Gettysburg Lee acted stupidly. Longstreet warned him repeatedly not to wage the battle that he did but Lee chose not to listen. He wiped out Picketts division completely. In the end Longstreet proved correct but history was not overly kind to him. Lee was revered so they would nt blame him for the defeat so Longstreet proved to be the patsy.

The History channel did a great story on Grant. Saw it a few years ago but I know it gets repeated, as does most of the History Channels content.

He was a total failure in business and relied on his family for support. A very good general though. Probably the first "modern" one.

He was also a decent president

Any weekend plans?

I just gotta stack some firewood tomorrow. It’s cold and snowy here in Jersey (it’s not new anymore), so it might be a good weekend to relax and chill a bit too.

I have a hard time sitting still.

I’m sure I’ll find some things to keep me busy on the farm! And if not, I may check out all the tree damage up in the woods from this weeks wind.

Sounds very familiar lol

Thank you both for a great laugh! I really enjoyed your writing. I'd love to share some stories - I fall in the middle somewhere between y'all

I have no respect for generals who killed Indians. Custer had it coming.
You really need to read the two books i referenced above. There were atrocities on both sides of the battle lines. In fact the Natives were very brutal to other tribes. So much so that it shocked the Europeans who lined up like gentleman and slaughtered each other face to face. Hollywood has done a serious disservice to our history.

....should I get a puppy?

My two other dogs are getting up in age. It’s time when I typically introduce a new one to the menagerie.

However, as I am now in my fifties, I wonder if this is the last opportunity to get a puppy?

I will be in my sixties when the puppy will be a ‘senior’ dog.

I've not seen the expiration date on my birth certificate :D
