The soul-numbing numbers of America's decline

This week, the Treasury Department announced that America's national debt crossed $34 trillion for the first time. This is a dark harbinger of things to come.

The country is regularly warned about the potential consequences of the national debt. It can wreck our economy through diminished investment, high interest rates, and persistently high inflation. It can increase international tensions, particularly when lenders are hostile foreign powers ( China now owns roughly $1 trillion of our debt). It can threaten the social safety net, which is relied upon by the poorest in our society. Top line: the higher the debt, the greater the likelihood of long-term suffering.

It was reported this week that U.S. border officials are on track to process over 300,000 illegal immigrants during the month of December. That would be another record. As with the debt, the number of illegal immigrants crossing our border each month (not to mention the tens of thousands who cross undetected) is so astronomical that it scrambles the nation’s collective capacity to comprehend it. A total of 300,000 border crossings per month is not appreciably different from 200,000 or 100,000 to the average person.

Both of these dubious new records, for which both major political parties share blame, speak to a nation that can no longer be bothered to fight for its own survival. That's another way of saying we are a nation in decline. If America is ever to be restored, she must look these ludicrous numbers in the face and fight the temptation to look away.

Lol....you should post this to right wing forum boards.....I'm sure it has them foaming at the mouth in rage. I've never seen such a blatant cat call to the base

Here we go with the debt again.

must be a democrat administration in the Whitehouse.

The right never bitches about the debt when it comes to building their massive construction project on the southern border. But building and maintaining a humongous wall, or hiring the border patrol to police it isn't wasteful government spending somehow and the debt? We want that....so...what debt?

No shit, and Trump was warned that his "tax cut" would add to that deficit that existed from Obama, and then from Bush, and from....get the idea. Your debt is not "one" parties fault. It is due to continuing governments that misappropriates revenues, and thinks it can spend and borrow it's way to a fiscal balance.

But why should I bother trying to explain numbers to you, a guy who can't even figure out 62% is better than 80% in a race to 0%.

They aren't even serious about the debt. Republican voters keep bitching about the deficit but keep voting for politicians who promise not to raise taxes in order to pay off the debt.

No they vote for pretenders who'll grandstand about pinching pennies here and there in the budget or every time they have to raise the debt ceiling, but as soon as they get a majority it's always another tax cut package that inevitably Blow the debt up like a balloon that's their #1 priority.

So ignore his hot air. He's not serious about solving the debt problem.

Right wing idiots have aneurysms over the border and the debt.

Both of which are bullshit stories told to them by their handlers.

We're only half a century into decline. We have at least a full century of decline ahead. Most of the nation's wealth and privilege will disappear, along with the values, beliefs, and prejudices of the wealthy and privileged. Poor culture will be all the culture we have. The new religions and cultural trends of the next few centuries will start with the poor.

Guess you should start looking for a new country to call home. Maybe try Serra Leon, it kind of fits your vision of what a country should be.

And yet the Left tells us everything is just fine.
Are you fucking kidding? The very definition of conservative is wanting things to stay the same. Try applying some critical thinking for like, two seconds or at least use a dictionary once in a while.

It is hard to take the GOP's concerns about the debt seriously if they were as vocal about it when they hold the executive branch and both houses of congress. Instead, they passed a budget busting tax cut in the midst of the longest economic expansion in countries history. They have no platform to be complaining about the debt.

^somebody needs to figure something out. And I'm not talking about deciding on what to have for lunch today.
