I would generally call that a mood breaker.
However, the stepmother is a total fox and trophy wife. Someone is gonna have to see her through the mourning process, and hold her when she cries at night. The MC is just the person to help with that.

Maybe it starts out slow; the mom just has trouble sleeping in a bed alone, so she just has the MC sleep there (with emphasis on SLEEP). This seems to help greatly.

Eventually, certain urges start to creep in, and you can write the rest of the story yourself.

My only bout into this is disturbing, and it was some 20 years ago. We were working on the road and my coworker asked if I ever got my "red wings", which is bad enough for some, but said "yes, I had". He then said, "what about your blue wings", and I said, "I am not even sure what that is". He said it is when you do a corpse!

I almost puked... because for him... a very disturbed individual, it was a thing.

I am still gagging, and it is 20 years later.

That's pretty much the plot of "Gerald's Game," a recent horror movie. Except there was no maid. Quite disturbing.
