We have the Story Review Forum. But I’d love to see people post threads about someone else’s story that they read and loved. But why they loved it. What they learned from it. What was compelling about it. Even maybe little things that could be improved.

I can't recall seeing any threads specifically devoted to that, but it's not really uncommon to see people mentioning books and other media that influenced them. We get a lot of sci-fi and fantasy name-dropping and memes in here, which some might consider 'low art,' but it's a pretty common thing to occur in most any thread.

Maybe you or someone who wants that can start a circular firing squad thread. :LOL:
Submit a story to the group for structured analysis (i.e. a questionnaire to be filled out) and anyone who responds in kind can submit a story or excerpt to the group in turn.
I kind of doubt it would go over well, unless everyone is on the same page about whether it's to be a true critique or a group wank and praise. 🤭

It would probably be a surprise for a newcomer, but this forum has nothing to do with discussing writing and literary works. In all my time here, I did pick up a good advice or two, but 99.99% of the time the forum is about some casual fun, often in the form of silly banter. There are instances where we discuss the effects our stories have on readers in the sense of ratings and comments, but for as long as I have been here, there hasn't been a single topic where we discussed writing or literary works, at least one that didn't derail into fore mentioned silly banter from post 5# already.

The forum is what we made of it. It is a place for fun, some gossip, and procrastinating, but hardly more than that.

In the few months I've been hanging around here, I've participated in long discussions about first person present tense, our achievements as writers on Lit, best ways to open our stories, writing styles and story contests and challenges. I've started threads about practical English and about writing in the second person.

If you haven't seen any discussions about writing, you've not been looking very closely.

If I'm inferring the correct intent, I think @EmilyMiller is looking for more specific literal influences.

For example, I've recently become infatuated with @onehitwanda through her latest offering 'The Lost Girl of Avignon'.

Wanda's ability to turn a phrase, her word craft is amazing. The word choice is so specific an so perfect, I have found myself re-reading some passages several times just because I want to experience the artistry of her words one more time. I've found myself sitting and studying the structure of what she does. She inspires me to be more intentional and specific in what I do. She reminds me that words matter. In a large way, she's the reason I am going through the pain and torture to submit a 750 word challenge piece. I know it will take that level of attention to get it right.

This may sound over the top and excessively fanboyish, but she does inspire me to want to be better at what I do, and gives me a model I can reference to get there.
 
I do. But to me, all writing is literary. I don't accept facile divisions of writing into literary and non-literary. If it's a story, it's literary. The results might differ, but the basic mechanics are the same. Character, plot, conflict, prose style, grammar. It's all the same thing. The better you do it, the better the results will be. It doesn't matter whether you're trying to stimulate someone's taste for prose or their desire to ejaculate.

This is a fairly intelligent, educated forum. It's obvious that there are a lot of people who have intelligent things to say and I think if we are receptive and astute we can all gain something from that.

So, yes, I think of this as a literary forum.

Insofar as AH is a forum where people discuss literary topics, then sure, it's a literary forum. It's not only that, any more than it's only a tentacle porn forum. Though of course that, too, is discussed.

I don't know what you're reading, but I could not disagree more.

Just in the last two months there have been threads and discussions on different points of view, tenses, opening sentences, the role of conflict and drama, the importance of plot and character, copyright and plagiarism, various kinks and tastes, abstruse word usage, the ethics of various erotic subjects, what it means to be erotic, the role of artificial intelligence in writing, etc. The gossip and silliness are fun, too, and I like to partake in them, but they're not the whole enchilada.

Yeah, we're not spending most of our time going back and forth on the merits of Proust (I haven't even read him yet), but that doesn't mean it's not literary.
 
I can't say it's always about writing. I can't say I haven't derailed a thread for fifty. I can't say I haven't discussed literature here. I can't say @StillStunned, I call Shakespear Bill or the Bard.

No, I call him WillyBoy!
