I just completed an extremely short (would barely be half of a Literotica page) Sci-Fi humor story. Parodied robot sex, if you have to ask. I'd like to publish it in the humor category, as it absolutely belongs there as opposed to Sci-Fi. However, when I look at the humor category it's near empty. Is it worth publishing in this category? Will anyone read it? Will anyone get it?

Will I get my much-needed validation?!?!?

Less stories within the category ultimately means less competition. You might not get a lot of reads early on, but with the right tags, it might actually get read somewhat frequently for years to come. Especially if you land yourself a decent spot on the Top Lists. So I'd put it there. It's not like the Sci-Fi category gets a lot of views either. šŸ˜…

Humour is very much in the eye of the beholder, so be prepared for a yawn response.

I've got a couple of little comic stories that did okay, but their scores aren't the greatest in my catalogue.

In Search of a Story

Aalison the Aardvark
Comedy is tough as is. Add in you aren't in a primed audience comedy venue (like a stand-up club or late night show) and you've got swift currents to paddle through.

Some of the pieces that warm my heart by their existence the most are in Humor. Seems people are a little more likely to de-shackle themselves, taking bigger swings, "for the laugh."

Good stuff.

I just published my first story in H&S, "A Christmas Miracle." In three days it's had almost 5k reads. It's still top story on the page, so it's still getting looked at.

This was actually funny and fundamentally sound. Satire was good. The irony *chef's kiss*

I'm not up on the category but 4.7ish seems good to me, especially starting handicapped by the reader "now how am I to put myself in the (non) shoes of an aardvark?)

Classic author takes a big swing, gets good lumber on it, audience still doesn't fully understand what has occured.

It's relatively low readership and the voters are fairly hard to please. Scores tend to be low. But that does present opportunities. The competition for awards is fairly thin. I've won the Readers Choice the past two years with rather low scoring stories.

White Castle Christmas

The Blowjob at the End of the World

My 750-Word Project satire, That Fine Line, was in the Reader's Choice competition a few years ago (no, it didn't win). The event listing and the RC writeup results give it a couple of additional ways to draw attention so they still help it gets reads and ratings from time to time (and even a new comment a few days ago). The category by itself doesn't tend to get as many views but if you can do it as part of such an event, you might draw a larger viewing initially and over time.

I've only written one Humor story, for Christmas, two years ago.

It did okay. Not my best rated story or most viewed.

I suppose how it's received is just like anything else we write here. Depends on the readers.

Just like everyone has their own kinks, everyone has their own sense of humor.

I've done a couple of humourous stories - mostly they're what you might call long-form jokes - a thousand words or so to set up one main punchline. They did okay in terms of rating (though one recently just barely lost it's H, nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Neither of them attracted many views (sub 2k) or picked up many votes (20-30) Most of my stories have humorous elements included, but I try to keep them in the more mainstream categories and usually keep the sex erotic rather than farcicle.

The Sorcerer of a Thousand Names
Confessions of an Italian Bellboy

As people have said, humour is very subjective and I rarely find any of the stories in Humour do much for me personally. They tend to be too over the top trying to be funny.

Some shorter humour pieces I've put in other categories have faired much better in terms of attention and voting.

Goodbye, My Hot Young Wife (LW so not a high score, but got the eyeballs)
The Unbearable Obliviousness of the Late Night Nerd (In Exhibit, higher score, more views, not that many votes considering)

And since it's died a miserable death in Letter and Transcripts, I'm going to keep shilling the underneath as the funniest thing I've written.

The Demonization of Humberstone Road (A perfect five score on only five votes. And one of them was my own )

I've written several stories in humor and they seem to do pretty well. I think that's because I don't "invent" humor for a story. I just write the humor that seems to happen in everyday life, at least for some people.

I’ve only made one humor submission. It’s been poorly received so far. Then it’s basically just a a parody of a song. And it’s in a comp and so attracts 1-bombs like flies.

I wouldn't know where to begin with humour. Do you write slapstick? Some other form of comedy? Do you write a normal sex story, but try to add humourous elements? And if so, when does it go in H&S instead of a more traditional category?

DAMMIT! Now I want to see whether I can write H&S.

I'm thinking a Georgian romance in the style of Georgette Heyer.

"Mrs Danbury's parties were known throughout the county. Old and young alike eagerly awaited their invitations, and when the time came made their grateful appearance. Even Mr Henley, the vicar, overcame his personal and moral objections to attend each one, afterwards decrying the lewd and licentious behaviour in his letters to the Bishop. 'For as Your Grace must surely understand I have a duty towards my flock: not only as a man of the cloth, to watch over them in their times of greatest temptation, but also as a representative of the Church, to engage in social gatherings.' He would then proceed to describe, much to the satisfaction of His Grace and His Grace's secretary, precisely who had engaged with whom, in what manner, and how many times."

I've posted a couple of 750 word stories (are they really stories?) there, to a pretty good response.

Humor and satire were my forte for a while -- as I posted recently, I was reguray toplisted and getting Editor's picks -- It's REALLY hard to make a story both genuinely humorous and sexy. The key is not too make the sex humorous, if you want it to be sexy. Trust me on this. The humour should be in the sitation, dialog -- anywhere but the sex. My stories had totally ridiculous, zany humour, and the sex in there was outrageous and hilarious, but readers' cocks and pussies remained stubbornly at their resting dimensions throughout.

EDIT: Don;t look for those stories here, you'll need to know my old alt and use the wayback machine.

I think a lot of my stories are laced with humor. My first Halloween 2023 submission could fit there, if not probably better in Sci-fi / Fantasy, where it ended up.

I think it's a big ask to mix humour and erotica.

Did anyone really find any of the "Confessions of a...." films, a turn on?

Maybe a goal for the new year... a comedic stroker of less than a Lit page.

I don't know how to write without humor. That's not a flex. It's completely unnecessary in erotica. Sure, a little bit of humor here and there is nice, but if the author gets carried away with comedy, it almost always becomes a parody (thanks but no thanks, I already know what's ridiculous about smut) or self-indulgent and annoying. Authors who can stay on point in any genre have my respect. I'm not one of you.

In looking at some of the stories that have been shared here, mine is a blip in comparison. Super short, and if someone's actually aroused by it I'd be surprised. Still might publish, though.

I've done a couple of stories in the Humor & Satire category. They were competition entries, so they got a few more views than they perhaps normally would have, and they scored well enough. It's not a super busy category, but I loved writing the stories, so I was very happy with the experience...
