Do you ever worry that your stories might reveal your identity?

I pulled one or two of my very personal stories because a reader could "triangulate" the people, places and events in them and get a good enough picture of me to find out who I am.
For those of you (the majority?) who like to remain anonymous, is this ever an issue that leads you to "obfuscate" your story to keep people from learning too much about you?

Nah, ChatGPT doesn’t know enough about me to out me.

Beep boop.

More seriously, kind of? I don’t think a stranger could figure out who I am, but I think if someone who knew me well in real life read my stuff and looked on the forums, they might put two and two together. But if they know me that well, I expect the most it would mean is an awkward conversation and, “you could have told me!”

Stories, forum posts. (I should repeat that, “forum posts” part.) Everyone should be careful. Especially when considered in combination over time. Tidbits add up!

Yes, I worry, and obfuscate. Good and timely thread.

From the comments and emails I got, I think I’m pretty safe from some random stalker finding me.

Not too worried about it though. I openly tell my family and friends what I write with the caveat they not tell my mother. She passes six years ago, so she knows anyway and I haven’t been struck by lightning, so.

I do have some stories that I don’t share because they are too private or intimate. I’ve only posted a couple of short stories in the forum. I haven’t officially posted any the “stories” yet.

Honestly? Not really.

I've probably put more of my "real life" into my stories than I should.

But if someone really wanted to waste their time and effort trying to figure out who I am in The Real World, all they'd find is a regular shlub with a regular job and a pretty average, often boring life who writes the occasional smut story for his own amusement and self gratification.

It's the same reason I don't worry about hackers too much. Not that I want to make it easy for them. But even if they managed to hack my bank account, they're not even gonna steal enough to cover the cost of the effort to do so. 🤣

I assume there are ways to snoop out someone's identity online, though I don't know what they are. I don't think I've generated either a rabid enough fanbase or an angry enough mob to drum up that kind of enthusiasm. So I don't spend too much time worrying about that. I don't put enough personal details in my stories or my posts that a casual observer could identify me. But by definition a casual observer wouldn't care too much about what my real name is. (It's Sam. There are a few of us.)

The thing I have thought about is if someone who knows me pops along, there might be a few clues around for them. But then, they'd be here too, so any potential awkwardness goes both ways.

It bothered me in the beginning. Now, less so. But the stories I upload here are fictional so it'd be difficult to pair it together with who I really am, even though there's obviously bits and pieces in my stories that are based on myself or on experiences that I've lived through to an extent.

The only way it'd really be cause for serious concern is if it ended up in the press.

Hmmm…
In my story “My Female Boss and the CMNF Party” every non-nude, non-sex scene actually happened. She wasn’t my boss, but a real woman I worked with and flirted with.
I doubt she’d be on Lit but you never know… 😳

The only story I've written that was based on real-life events doesn't describe anything that anyone knows about besides my wife and me.

I'll be much more worried if I find out that my 70-year-old mother writes here, and her preferred categories are BDSM and Anal.
Well there's something it never occurred to me to be afraid of. Thanks for that.

Well. I don’t write about my life, so that wouldn’t give me away. Then again, I live in a very, very small country, so I’m probably way more recognizable than most of you guys. Then again… so far I’ve told two people that I write here. The other read one story, the other didn’t read even that. So I guess I could only hope that anyone was so interested in me that they’d try to find out who I am.

I personally don’t care if they find out I write pornography. It’s not like I’m announcing it to the world and insisting the world accept it. But if asked I will be honest and confess what I’ve done. Then I will deal with whatever misconceptions the person might have. All the sex I depict is consensual and enjoyable for the characters involved and hopefully the majority of the readers. The readers who enjoy such stories, myself included, are for whom I was writing. I wrote to indulge fantasies and if you would bother to read my work with a mature open mind, you’d see I do not indulge in unacceptable kinks therein. I do not seek to harm or objectify anyone, merely to entertain. Yes, I am AchtungNight, real name Doug Ramsay [redacted but known to those I trust] and I write quality amateur pornographic fantasy stories. This is not illegal and it does not preclude me from being a good person who has aided multiple people in need of help for virtue as its own reward. You can believe me or not, I know this proclamation is true and am confident I am supported by the God of unknowable nature in whom I believe. I am a committed ethical person, a genuine good man. My job recognizes this. Hopefully I will one day soon get a significant other who does also. Till then I have faith and am content with myself.

I would 100% believe that Cypher and Kitty Pryde traded slashfiction.
