Even the 1947 UN Mandate was too far, the same sort of sectarian disaster that the departing British did in India, and Israel went far, far beyond that UN Mandate. Israel can't win in the long run. Invading Gaza and holding down a hostile population will be a nightmare for Israel, especially if Hezbollah get involved in Israel's north. The Palestinians of 1948, or their heirs, need the right to return home. End the apartheid.

That’s not true. Before them it was the PLO which was also a very militant group, although they have mellowed in recent years because the militancy wasn’t working. From day 1 of Israel’s existence the Palestinians have been led by groups that called for their destruction. The slight moderation of the PLO after Arafat died was the closest they ever came to non-militancy and even then their terms for any kind of two state solution were too ridiculous to be taken seriously.

Israel has been winning for its entire existence. It has beaten its opponents in every conflict. If you are reality-based, you must recognize that it is likely to continue doing so. Its position is more secure than it was before. Many of its previous enemies have given up the fight and decided it's here to last. There is every reason to believe that in the long run Israel will win and its Arab enemies will keep losing, and the ones who will suffer will be primarily the Arab people.

A decent person should WANT Israel to exist in the long run. Israel, whatever its policy faults, is a liberal democracy that protects basic human rights and democratic government for its citizens. None of its neighbors can claim that. An Arab Muslim enjoys greater individual rights and the ability to participate meaningfully in government as a citizen of Israel than in any of the neighboring Arab countries. That's a fact. Arab Muslims are members of the Knesset. Name an Arab country where Jews play a role in the government. You cannot, because nearly all the Jews fled or were expelled and those governments are openly anti-Semitic.

The "right of return" is a fantasy in this case. It is crystal clear that it is never going to happen. No country in Israel's position would grant such a right. Seriously: let's have 3 million hostile Arabs, whose great-grandparents lived in Israel in the 1940s, flood the country and take land that has been held by Israelis for the last 75 years. That's a death wish. No country could be expected to do that. No country ever would do that.

Does anybody seriously call for the "right of return" for Jews to return to Arab countries from which they were forced to leave in 1948? Of course not. Nor is there any significant international hue and cry about it in the context of Pakistan/India or Greek/Turkish Cypriots. It is not a serious claim.

The Arabs can have peace and sovereignty tomorrow if they want it. They have to give up their pointless, failed, death-wish war against Israel to get that peace. They must recognize Israel's right to exist as an independent, sovereign state. If they were to do that, they would have peace, and everybody could move on, live peacefully together, and prosper. Unfortunately there is a paradigm shift from today to as little as a decade ago. The Israeli response today would seem to many as being cruel and an over the top response. What people don’t include into the equation is that Israel is surrounded by groups of terrorist that in less than a ten year span have acquired sophisticated weapons systems that can reach into every city and town within Israel threatening the very existence of Israel. These new weapon systems change the dynamics on the ground and drives a different response that Israel needs to take just to break even. It is imperative in order for Israel to exist under some kind of semi-quasi secure perimeter to expand the conflict that has now escalated and devolved into an asymmetrical conflict where the enemy not only hides amongst itself using civilian as shields but also has the capability to reach out and touch far behind the battle lines an cause devastating damage and loss of life using sophisticated weapons. Israel‘s only response is to find and destroy these weapons and delivery systems while destroying Hamas. Nothing else will secure Israel‘s future.
