The House GOP is scheduled to vote at 10 a.m. between Reps. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise.
Just saw the old news of Scalise winning. I hope he is a better speaker and doesn’t need to be voted off too.
McCarthy didn't need to be voted.off.Just saw the old news of Scalise winning. I hope he is a better speaker and doesn’t need to be voted off too.
The Democratic candidate is Jeffries and he has no chance at winning.Jordan has offered to do the nomination speech which should bring sufficient votes to defeat the D candidate and more importantly isolate the rump which ousted McCarthy. Critics who think Scalise is a better option should hold their fire, his voting record is that he has been in total lockstep with Jordan all the way. Jordan's talk is way more incendiary, but when it comes to action, they are 2 peas from the same pod.
Gaetz has already committed to Scalise which indicates the ouster was largely a personal issue. If Gaetz expects any sort of promotion he should be disappointed because no-one will trust him, which is neat, because it was lack of trust which enabled him to oust McCarthy.
One interesting observation I heard on the radio was if the D's chose to be crafty they could withdraw Jeffreys which would allow the Jordan supporters to vote against Scalise without risk. He would still be elected but only by an overall minority. Bit of a smartarse idea perhaps.
I see Scalise as the most likely heir to the gavel, but I could also see a complete impasse, resulting in the vulnerable moderate "republicans" in the house finally throwing up their hands and making Hakeem Jeffries Speaker (with some power sharing arrangement) just to keep government functioning.
*nods*
Agree. Scalise wants the job but from all the coverage I’m seeing it looks like Jordan is next up. Given the grueling demands of the job and Scalise’s health (blood cancer), it’s best for him personally to lose this contest.
Steve Scalise represents a disappearing district in Louisiana with rising sea level that still has unrepaired damage from Hurricane Katrina. He was one of four people shot by a Dem terrorist at a baseball practice in 2017.
It will not be this week. At least I would be shocked. I am not sure they will have it next week the way things are. The moderates will ultimately break...unless McCarthy gets the nod. Believe it or not...this is the best result for the Country. Sad as that is. I can see enough Democrats crossing the aisle if...he asked. That is the problem. The offer was there previously and he turned them down.Scalise far from the votes needed for Speaker. I'm curious how long it will take for them to hold the vote .....looks like it will be a while.
Steve Scalise picked as GOP speaker nominee, but struggles to lock down votes to win the gavel
