I was born in early October… I love the fall, and am most comfortable in October... okay, I am a broken human.

But! I love the Halloween season movies…. if they aren’t too gross.. or too evil… 🤣🤣😁😁.

I have a list of movies I watch every October… one of then is 1931… Dracula! With Bela Legosi…

what are your October must watch movies?

And what are you watching tonight?

Love this thread idea. I've been compiling my go-to Halloween film list lately.

The Wicker Man (Christopher Lee original)
Sleepy Hollow
Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Witch
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Cabin in the Woods

Have you ever seen the 1931 Spanish version of Dracula? It was filmed concurrently with the English Bela Lugosi version on the same Universal Studios sets, but the English version filmed in the day and Spanish at night. The Spanish cinematographers would stay up to watch the English version being filmed, and plan out ways to improve upon their shots. They had basically the same script, but the Spanish version left a few things in that were cut from the English version. The Spanish version was also originally filmed for distribution outside the United States, and they were able to take a few more liberties that wouldn’t have gotten past US censors, like being able to see the female lead’s nipples through her negligée.

I watched them back-to-back on Tubi (free streaming app) last year and actually sliiightly prefer the Spanish version. Worth checking out, for anyone who doesn’t mind subtitles!

I bought a DVD set a few years ago with the various 30’s and 40’s Dracula movies, and it includes the Spanish version. Being a fan of Bela Legosi, Edward Van Sloan and Dwight Frye, I much prefer their version myself. But even the liner notes say many people prefer the Spanish version too. 😊

Oh! I forgot to answer the main question! I seem to share many October faves with others here. Oh the top of my head:

Beetlejuice
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Candyman (they’re both good but so different; slight edge goes to 2021)
The Corpse Bride
The Craft
Dracula (both English and Spanish 1931 versions)
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (yes, I know it’s bad. No, IDGAF)
Evil Dead
Halloween (original)
Hocus Pocus
Hotel Transylvania 1 & 2
House on Haunted Hill (90s…I know, I’m a weirdo)
Let the Right One In (Swedish, but English-language remake Let Me In is also decent for those who prefer not to read subtitles)
Night of the Living Dead
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Pit and the Pendulum (1961, Vincent Price)
The Shining
The Thing
Urban Legend
Wolf by Night
Young Frankenstein
Zombieland

Dia de los Muertos (November 1st) bonuses:
Coco
The Book of Life

In contemplating this list, I realized something: while I do enjoy the horror movies that are *just* scary, the movies I tend to rewatch more are the ones that are FUN. Once I know the plot and the ending and where all the jump scares are, rewatch value tends to go down for me.

I wish the Lugosi cast was directed by the Spanish version director.
Tod Browning’s direction is a little too theater-like for me.
Still a great movie and perfect cast. Bela will always be Dracula.

So many good ones here. My list is mostly compiled by ones already mentioned above.
My animated must sees
Nightmare Before Christmas
Corpse Bride
Coraline
Frankenweinie
Monster House
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Garfield’s Halloween Adventure
Fat Albert’s Halloween Special
Ichabod and Mr Toad
Scooby Doo on Zombie Island

Live action movies
Sleepy Hollow
Beetlejuice
The Addams Family
Haunted Mansion
The Witches of Eastwick
Fright Night
Silver Bullet
The Lost Boys
Near Dark
Pumpkinhead

Ooohhhh I just watched this last week!!🤪😏

Good un! I liked it even though it got bashed by critics...
I did too! It had just enough humor, but isn’t a comedy at all. And Nick was amazing! And as always, I absolutely love Awkwafina. 🥰🥰🥰

And as a huge fan of the 1931 Dracula, the fact this was kind of a sequal (sp?) was really cool!

Transylvania 6-5000 (Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begly, Jr, Geena Davis, Joseph Bologna, John Byner and many more)

High Spirits. (Daryll Hannah, Peter O'Toole, Beverly D'Angelo, Steve Gutenberg, Jennifer Tilly, etc.)

Dracula, Dead And Loving It. (Leslie Nielsen, Amy Yasbeck, Harvey Korman)

Once Bitten (Cleavon Little, Lauren Hutton)

You have good taste! I’m a big fan of the Universal classic monsters myself. My favorite is probably Bride of Frankenstein. I also enjoy some of the cheesier movies too made around that time or later. I should really plan some watching for this month!

Oooh The Last Man on Earth is on TV right now! I lovvve Vincent Price! It’s the original movie adaptation of the book “I Am Legend” by Robert Matheson, which I’ve also read. Omega Man starring Charleton Heston and I Am Legend starring Will Smith are good adaptations too. They all bring something different to the table.
