Exactly who are "they"? If you're talking about either side of the Civil War - or both for that matter - that was 150 years ago and a lot has changed since then. There was "a real embodiment of America" then, and there is one now. They're not the same.

I'm familiar with what you're referring to, and I don't recall any that actually fit any of the categories you claimed above.

Women couldn't vote, but they were recognized as citizens with at least some rights. So were white men who were under 21 and/or didn't own land, who also couldn't vote. Slaves were not; they had no rights at all and weren't even recognized as fully human. But the South wanted to make one exception and one exception only to that rule when it would have benefitted them.
