As I said, southerners are more laid back. The slaveowners with the biggest plantations were all northerners, they were constantly working and were constantly pushing their slaves to work harder whereas a southerner owned plantation would have the slaveowners sleeping in, the slaves would be sleeping in, the bare minimum amount of work would be getting done(this is where the image of slaveowners sitting around comes from but the slaves on those plantations were largely doing the same thing because that was the culture)and eventually the plantations owned by the northerners would win out(which makes the hatred of the Confederacy and the South ironic because the slaveowners whom the South were fighting on behalf of were northern born).

The clash between rural and urban today mostly has to do with urban degeneracy and high crime and a similar clash of lifestyles as the North and the South.

The cause was slavery….you really do drink the look aid don’t you?

If the master didn’t feel like working then they weren’t going to expect that the slaves work that much either because making slaves work was also…work. LA is definitely a dump compared to its former glory but when people talk about rising crime they are talking about mid sized cities that used to be very safe and now they are becoming pretty dangerous. Where I live used to be almost ridiculously safe but now the crime rate is astronomically higher than it was when I was a kid.

Even if the guard was working in the fields next to his prisoners, what he was doing was evil. What right did he have to treat other human beings like animals?

The crime rate has actually been dropping since leaded gasoline was banned. It used to be much higher.

They still had to make the overseers do it too. If they felt like drinking moonshine instead then they were drinking moonshine instead. I know how southerners work to this day, they get all or most of the first task you give them done with breaks in between and then if they have extra time to do something else they spend that time not doing anything.

This idea that southerners were the ones pushing their slaves to work sun up to sun down is just factually wrong. You don’t need to demonize southern plantations to demonize slavery itself.

Yeah the slavery resorts definitely treated their forced kidnapped laborers better.

It was forced unpaid labor but the point is that it was labor and slaves did develop skills from it that they didn’t have before.

Nobody is defending slavery here, what is in dispute is the asinine idea that slaves didn’t develop something from their years of hard work.

Nobody is saying that slavery was good or should be legal here, I am just telling you that the images of barbarity that chattel slavery brings up in people’s mind were thankfully not as common as people believe(although I did say that southerners were very rough to others and themselves so they would definitely physically abuse slaves that refused to work).
