Many Americans Still Wrongly Think Guns Make Us Safer​

Perhaps most striking of the poll’s findings is the incorrect belief, held by many Americans, that guns make them safer. Sixty percent of Americans believe it’s true that armed school police guards have been proved to prevent school shootings. Eighteen percent of respondents thought the claim was “definitely” true and 42% believed it “probably” true.

In fact, as KFF noted, no studies have shown this, and researchers in 2021 found that in an examination of 133 cases of school shootings and attempted school shootings from 1980 to 2019, “armed guards were not associated with significant reduction in rates of injuries.”

What’s more, 13% believed it was “definitely” true and 29% believed it was “probably” true that people who have firearms at home are less likely to be killed by a gun than people who don’t have a gun. That’s also false: Studies have shown among other things that guns are rarely used in self-defense, that living with a handgun owner is associated with substantially elevated risk — particularly for women — of dying by homicide, that the spike in gun sales after the Sandy Hook mass shooting was linked to an increase in accidental deaths, and that handgun ownership is associated with elevated risks of death by suicide.

At its core, the whole Deplorable obsession with guns is not about promoting safety. Safety is just a bullshit argument they use.

This obsession is about compensating for Deplorable fear of people who they perceive as being different from them. It's about Deplorable fear of change in societal makeup. It's about their fantasy that they are Clint Eastwood and can even the score for their lack of happiness with violence or the threat of violence.

Deplorables are so fearful and insecure about their own inadequacies that they hold no positive vision for society, They cannot even imagine a positive vision. For them, it's just dog-eat-dog, social Darwinism, and fuck-with-me-and-I'll-shoot-you.

A society that lacks a positive vision is a society in decline. It's time to prosecute anyone making illegal threats of violence, limit gun sales, vet all potential gun owners, and develop a positive societal vision for the next generations.

And you want our military to give up its’ guns? They are barred from operating domestically in any way.

The second amendment says to maintain “a well regulated militia”, so I’m guessing you are fully trained and operate in conjunction your state militia.

^^^Good example of the bullshit safety argument. Here's another Deplorable who says professional security people have guns for safety purposes, and therefore every individual can be safer if they are armed.

Embedded in that argument is the fantasy that some day he may need to hold off the military or the police or a private security detail with his guns. How has that fantasy worked out lately?

2) I live in a place where everyone is armed, or presumed to be, so we don’t have any crime… but we do get the occasional bear in the yard.

I live in a place where most of us are not armed, we have no crime. My doors are not locked, my keys can be found in the vehicle ignition. I know all my neighbours on a first name basis. I have bears, wolves, coyotes etc around. My question is, is your door locked? Where are your car keys to be found?

3) Whether the rest of you feel safer or know what you’re doing isn’t anything I can affect so it’s not my concern.

I am safe, it's not something I need to even think about. That is what my society offers. There is no need to promote an agenda of fear and a requirement for personal or family protection.

As for the OP - I don't really care if people are or are not safer with guns. I have lots of guns because I want to have lots of guns. I don't need a reason and I couldn't care less if my guns upset people.

I don't disagree with anything here but what I feel one of the biggest problems with the gun debate is that people like you won't step up and speak out about the morons and mental cases who have the same access to guns as you.
