Many Americans Still Wrongly Think Guns Make Us Safer

Perhaps most striking of the poll’s findings is the incorrect belief, held by many Americans, that guns make them safer. Sixty percent of Americans believe it’s true that armed school police guards have been proved to prevent school shootings. Eighteen percent of respondents thought the claim was “definitely” true and 42% believed it “probably” true.

In fact, as KFF noted, no studies have shown this, and researchers in 2021 found that in an examination of 133 cases of school shootings and attempted school shootings from 1980 to 2019, “armed guards were not associated with significant reduction in rates of injuries.”

What’s more, 13% believed it was “definitely” true and 29% believed it was “probably” true that people who have firearms at home are less likely to be killed by a gun than people who don’t have a gun. That’s also false: Studies have shown among other things that guns are rarely used in self-defense, that living with a handgun owner is associated with substantially elevated risk — particularly for women — of dying by homicide, that the spike in gun sales after the Sandy Hook mass shooting was linked to an increase in accidental deaths, and that handgun ownership is associated with elevated risks of death by suicide.

Lit Deplorables seem to have a limited knowledge of firearms when it comes to actual facts. And their chickenshit nature leads me to believe they'd never be able to pull a gun on another person - even to protect a loved one.

So, at least they're not a threat. Just drink a Bud Light, or unfurl a rainbow flag, and they'll run away crying to vent their disgust on the Internet rather than confront anyone. 😎

At its core, the whole Deplorable obsession with guns is not about promoting safety. Safety is just a bullshit argument they use.

This obsession is about compensating for Deplorable fear of people who they perceive as being different from them. It's about Deplorable fear of change in societal makeup. It's about their fantasy that they are Clint Eastwood and can even the score for their lack of happiness with violence or the threat of violence.

Deplorables are so fearful and insecure about their own inadequacies that they hold no positive vision for society, They cannot even imagine a positive vision. For them, it's just dog-eat-dog, social Darwinism, and fuck-with-me-and-I'll-shoot-you.

A society that lacks a positive vision is a society in decline. It's time to prosecute anyone making illegal threats of violence, limit gun sales, vet all potential gun owners, and develop a positive societal vision for the next generations.

And the “fuck-with-me” can be whatever the Deplorables decide is threatening their comfortable privilege on any given day or at any given moment.

The “and-I’ll-shoot-you” is the Deplorables ignorant and cowardly default method of acting out.

SAD!!!

I like to target shoot in my backyard range. That's my majority reason for owning firearms. Would I use them to defend my home and family if absolutely necessary? Of course. But target shooting is my main firearm activity.

Sorry to burst your illusion.

Do attack and insult me in your normal trollish, shrieking liberal manner. I fully expect it.

What does this have to do with the erroneous perception that guns make us safer?

(It seems you are looking for an argument.)

Maybe they don't but there are just way too many examples out that they do. SOOOOOOOOOOO, I'll give up firearms when the military, all the cops, all of the security details around politicians, celebrities, and folks that can afford to pay others to keep them safe all give up their guns. Until that happens well, yes, I guess they do make it safer for the individual.

So funny as you feel so “safe”….with how many firearms?

And you want our military to give up its’ guns? They are barred from operating domestically in any way.

The second amendment says to maintain “a well regulated militia”, so I’m guessing you are fully trained and operate in conjunction your state militia.

^^^Good example of the bullshit safety argument. Here's another Deplorable who says professional security people have guns for safety purposes, and therefore every individual can be safer if they are armed.

Embedded in that argument is the fantasy that some day he may need to hold off the military or the police or a private security detail with his guns. How has that fantasy worked out lately?

He concludes by guessing that guns make us safer.

They make me more safe.

1) I have fired everything from a BB gun to an M1 tank and have used guns since I was a child. Unlike most of you, I know what I’m doing.
Pretty condescending thinking you know more than "most" of us. Who is "most of us"?
2) I live in a place where everyone is armed, or presumed to be, so we don’t have any crime… but we do get the occasional bear in the yard.
I live in a place where most of us are not armed, we have no crime. My doors are not locked, my keys can be found in the vehicle ignition. I know all my neighbours on a first name basis. I have bears, wolves, coyotes etc around. My question is, is your door locked? Where are your car keys to be found?
3) Whether the rest of you feel safer or know what you’re doing isn’t anything I can affect so it’s not my concern.
I am safe, it's not something I need to even think about. That is what my society offers. There is no need to promote an agenda of fear and a requirement for personal or family protection.

Good post.

I've had guns all my life, and so do all my friends and neighbors. We used to take guns to school for show and tell and always had guns in the car/truck for hunting before and after school. Guns are tools. We never shot any body

So what's different now? People today have been desensitized to violence and parents just don't give a damn. Their precious little snot blowers can do no wrong and have never been told, No - nor have they ever faced consequences for their actions. They've been coddled and when someone calls them a name, they get all upset and have meltdowns.

Guns aren't the problem; people are. And it will get worse because society has lost respect for authority and believes everyone living in society can do whatever they want. They can be disrespectful to teachers and police, and believe the rules don't apply to them.

As for the OP - I don't really care if people are or are not safer with guns. I have lots of guns because I want to have lots of guns. I don't need a reason and I couldn't care less if my guns upset people.

You are terrified of life.

People who are fucking morons who have guns are the problem.

Taking away their guns is the solution.

Last idiot that said "they didn't have any crime" was stupid enough to give me the county they lived in. Within 10 minutes, I provided links to their newspaper and their sheriff department proving them wrong. Weird...they too though they knew more.

Those that don't give a fuck about the society they live in...should help start the process of giving states the right to leave. Either help our states to leave...or we can help your state to leave. This is the only way any state will survive.

I don't disagree with anything here but what I feel one of the biggest problems with the gun debate is that people like you won't step up and speak out about the morons and mental cases who have the same access to guns as you.
