The one I always heard was related to the Chicago fire. So much of the city burned down, it was rebuilt and is essentially the "second city" built there.

The other one I heard was as a derogatory thing vs New York back when the two were in competition for the largest city in the US.

Now, I gotta ask, are they from Chicago proper or "Chicago?" Lots of the suburbanites say they're from Chicago but, ya know. I'm comfortably outside of Chicago and the collar counties, so I'm safely neither.

Very true. They would call me out for saying they are from Chicago. They don't even consider where they're from suburbia, but a satellite city. But, it's all Chicago to me.
