SCOTUS watch thread: Trump immunity, Capitol riot defendants, abortion, censorship

I expected this one too:

The court agrees with the states that the HEROES Act does not authorize the debt forgiveness plan.

a few seconds ago
To be clear, the court has struck down the Biden administration debt-forgiveness program.

Did they just hand the House back to the Dems?

States can do what they want. Just pointing out the obvious get around

And the Democrats couldn't see it coming and have nothing but "oh wells". A proactive Party sees what is coming and has a plan how to combat it. A reactive Party has 4 fingers up their ass and tries to figure out how to get their thumb in. Don't vote for them....

Biden released a new plan. Congress is deadlocked. Which you well know. Especially with the filibuster and the current power balance.

The reality is that Americans are adults. It's not up to the government or the politicians to coddle them and lead them to give three fucks about looking out for their own interests instead of their obsession with shopping and BS like the Kardashians etc. American nonvoters need to put on their big kid pants and take care of business. And you need to quit making excuses for them.

Still blaming those THAT HAVE NEVER VOTED IN 250 YEARS for the failure of this Country i see. You gonna be crying a long time. In fact...you will die not seeing solutions. I expect more than what is. See...I am old enough to know it wasn't always like this. Argue for your limitations and so they shall be yours. I don't blame those that have always been disenfranchised. I blame the Party for not taking care of what needs done.

Wanna bet...Biden's "new" solution will be found unconstitutional too?

Considering that voter participation is down, I'm not sure what you're bitching about.

Your claim that all or even most of the 85% of the eligible voters who don't show up to primaries and the more than 50% who don't show up for the midterms and generals are disenfranchised is beyond preposterous. They have disenfranchised themselves by not caring.

They haven't been and aren't disenfranchised by anyone but themselves. They'd rather be consumers than citizens.

Quit treating them like children who can't figure out how to fight for themselves.

Pick any county in America. Any one. I bet they don't have more than the voter participation rates that I posted above.

How does it feel living in the Fascist State of Florida? Lol.

It isn't rocket science to those with a brain. Any Party that offers voters what they want...get voters to come out and support them. Why does the Republican Party win in your State? Because that Party has a message that speaks to more people in your State than the Democratic Party...whose message is "Well we ain't them".

SCOTUS sides with designer who didn't want to do gay wedding sites.

Predictable.

You've probably heard about how that whole case started with a lie? The web designer received a message ostensibly from a gay man...turns out the man was a real person, but he was 1) married to a woman and 2) himself a web-designer. But he was from San Francisco, so whoever used his name obviously assumed he must be gay.

As I have pointed out repeatedly...there are certain demographics that failed to vote in 2022. Why? Because the Party in charge failed to protect their Rights. Why support someone that didn't protect...didn't fight...for their Rights?
It would help if you could cite just what it was the Dems failed to do. Then take a closer look at whether they didn't even try to help, or were thwarted due to their paper-thin margins in both houses of Congress and the fact that the Senate Republicans could effectively block anything they couldn't get 60 votes for.

Good ole NANCY PELOSI told the President he did not have the Authority for Student Loan Forgiveness!

Biden claimed the US Supreme Court misinterpreted the US Constitution!

Again. Pick a county. Any county in the US.

My contention is that the eligible voter participation is not more than 15% for primaries and 50% or less for the larger elections.

Or just keep deflecting to the democrats. But then you know I'm right. People can't be fucked to vote and the democrats are just your whipping post because an apathetic electorate isn't as clear of a target.

Not at all a stretch, given some of the people currently serving on it. I would say many times in the last couple years, Biden has been right!

I do have mixed feelings about the student loan forgiveness case; I actually understand the logic of why the court ruled the way they did, but on some of these other cases...? I would agree that the current body of the Supreme Court OFTEN misinterprets the constitution! Sometimes deliberately.

Part of the rationale for President Biden’s student loan forgiveness measure was looming mass bankruptcies from student borrowers. A cynical, suspicious mind might wonder if that was almost the ENTIRE motivation for the PROMISE of debt relief. A rash of bankruptcies right when the economy was exceptionally fragile could have tipped things over the edge in the banking system.

That ^ MAY now happen. And banks STILL might collapse.

Ultimately, in the grand scheme of things, $10,000 -$20,000 dollars isn’t a huge freebie for people who likely did suffer inordinate employment hardships from the pandemic, and who had been fed a constant diet of college “hype.- (Ironically, a college education HAS historically resulted in much higher lifetime earnings, so it WASN’T “all” hype.)

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out politically and financially.

🤔

And yet Biden and his merry band of idiots have not addressed the outrageous college tuitions or putting some sort of regulation on colleges more interested in the almighty buck than educating our kids. Colleges are fat with cash which in part was facilitated by government stupidity.

I don't really have a personal interest in any of them.
Which is the same reason why you said you opposed a climate change measure in an earlier thread-- that you would be dead before taking action on that measure would have an impact.

So, if it doesn't affect you personally, you casually dismiss social or ecological responsibility.

That, although a good next step, would have done nothing to help the millions of Americans who are already drowning in debt they have no plausible way of paying down. Besides, I don't see how he could have gotten that through a Congress where Mitch McConnell has effective veto power over nearly everything.
